In Loving Memory of Doreen Ralston MacDonald
Doreen MacDonald passed away peacefully on May 5, 2025, at Optima Living Aspen Ridge, at the age of 94. She was born in Edmonton, Alberta, and moved to Red Deer at the age of 15, where she graduated from Lindsay Thurber High School. Doreen worked at Telus for many years, retiring in 1993.
Doreen lived with a zest for life, strong faith, and an unwavering positive attitude. She was always up for a good time or new adventure, whether hiking in the mountains, cross-country skiing, skating, or travelling. She explored Canada and visited many countries around the world. Family and friends were everything to her and she cherished time spent together, especially at reunions and gatherings.
She gave generously to both her family and community. Her deep commitment to church, civic involvement, the environment, and politics spanned decades. In recognition of her volunteerism, she received the Alberta Centennial Medal in 2005, the Canadian Association of Retired Persons (CARP) “Top 25 Canadians” award in 2009, the Mayor’s Recognition Award for Distinguished Voluntary Service in 2016, and the Conservative Party of Canada Certificate of Merit the same year.
One of her proudest achievements was submitting a proposal to name a new school after her friend, Mattie McCullough. The submission was selected by the Red Deer Public School District, and Doreen took great joy in honouring her friend in this lasting way.
Doreen was predeceased by her parents, Gerald and Elsie Wates, and daughter-in-law, Donna MacDonald. She is survived by her children: Bonnie Bliek (Tony), Bill MacDonald (Brenda), and John MacDonald (Pam); six grandchildren: Brad (Sheryl), Karri (Miguel), Eric (Ayesha), Garrett (Kelsey), Jenna (Matt), and Ben (Alison); thirteen great-grandchildren; her sister, Jean Knopp; and many members of her extended family.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff of Optima Living Aspen Ridge for their care and compassion.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Doreen’s memory may be made to Gaetz Memorial United Church, the Lending Cupboard, the Alzheimer Society, or a charity of one’s choice.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, July 3, 2025, at 1:30 p.m. at Gaetz Memorial United Church. Arrangements are entrusted to Eventide Funeral Home. Condolences to the family may be made by visiting www.eventidefuneralchapels.com
