August 20, 1922 – April 24, 2019

On April 24th, our beloved Mum, Doreen Mary Carlyle, passed away peacefully at the Red Deer Hospice. Mum was born in Hampstead, England, the first child of RAF Captain Howard and Mrs. Alice deMetz.

As a young woman, Mum joined the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (RAF) in March, 1942, and served as a Radar Operator until 1944. Following her marriage in 1944 to Sargeant Kenneth Carlyle (RCAF), she and daughter Angela emigrated to Canada in 1947, settling with Ken in Acme, Alberta. The family moved to Drumheller,the first of several of Ken’s postings with the Alberta Government, welcoming another daughter, Deborah. The family’s last move was to Red Deer in 1959.

As an adult student, Mum completed a Rehabilitation Counsellor/Practitioner Diploma (1981) at Red Deer College. During Mum’s time as a student, she and a group of others founded the Citizens Action Group for the Physically Disabled. This group obtained funding to purchase the first Citizen’s Action Bus. Mum remained an active board member until well into her 80s. The City of Red Deer recognized her contribution when she received the Mayor’s Community Service Award in 2006. Following work as a Rehab Counsellor, Mum was an assistant to Red Deer Museum’s archivist Michael Dawe. Mum retired in her late 60s, having the opportunity to travel and enjoy various pursuits.

Doreen is survived by her daughter Angela (Gary L’Hirondelle), her daughter Deborah (Howard) Jewell, grandchildren Jill Jeske of Vancouver and Hal Jeske (Patty) of Blackfalds. She is survived by her grandchildren’s father, Harold Jeske, by sister-in law Annette deMetz, sister-in-law Lois Carlyle, and several nieces and nephews. Doreen will be sadly missed by her very dear friends, Vicky and Travis Overacker, and their children, Lily and Jaxon. She was predeceased by her brother Howard, and niece Deirdre. The Family wishes to thank Dr. Maureen McCall, Red Deer Extendacare and the Red Deer Hospice for their care and kindness to Mum.

A Memorial Service for Mum will take place at 11 am, Friday, May 3 at St. Luke’s Anglican Church, Red Deer, Alberta. The family respectfully declines flowers, asking instead that if desired a donation in Mum’s memory be made to The Canadian Cancer Society or Central Alberta Humane Society.
