Donald James Manning BPE, LLB
November 24, 1946 – September 5, 2022
It is with great sadness that the family of Don Manning share the news of his passing on Monday, September 5, 2022. He died after a long and valiant battle with cancer.
Don leaves behind Norma, his beloved wife of 54 years, and children Susan (Jonathan), Scott and Paul (Trina). His adored grandchildren Carter, Lindsay, Ewan and Campbell remember him with great love and affection. Don’s family was his pride and joy. He is also survived by siblings David (Melo), Dan (Mary), Bruce, sister-in-law Rita, brother-in-law Alan, in-laws Bettie and Gord (Marsha), and extended family. Don is predeceased by his mother Gwen, sister Dell and brother Bill.
Don was born and raised in Red Deer. He was an excellent athlete, leading to a Physical Education degree on a Molson hockey scholarship at the University of Alberta (Golden Bears). He was proud to be a member of the team that won the national championship in 1968. He went on to a Bachelor of Laws at U of A, articling with Duncan Craig in Edmonton. He ultimately returned to Red Deer to establish a practice (Crowe Duhamel Manning) with two tremendous colleagues and friends. His law career spanned 40 years and across multiple disciplines.
Although he worked hard, Don cherished the many times and memories with family and friends at the Gull Lake cabin and the house in Arizona. Don and Norma also loved to travel near and far, particularly to see family or with family.
At heart, Don was a champion for the underdog. In the words of one of his great friends, he was strong, self-assured, dependable, trustworthy and loyal. He was honest, ethical and his presence commanded respect. In short, he was a great guy and exceptional family man.
Don would want to send his thanks to the wonderful staff at the Red Deer Cancer Clinic and Red Deer Regional Hospital. The special staff were amazing in their care of him.
At Don’s request, there will be a celebration of life for family and friends at a later date. If so inclined, please consider a donation in his name to the Alberta Cancer Foundation (albertacancer.ca), the Red Deer Regional Hospital (rdrhfoundation.com) or Stollery Children’s Hospital (stollerykids.com).
