It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Donald (Don) Douglas Holloway, at the age of 88. He passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 13th, 2021 at his home in Red Deer with his wife by his side. Don was born June 11, 1932, in Port Blandford, Newfoundland. Don is survived by his wife of 32 years, Sylvia Holloway (Pollock).
Don proudly served in the Canadian Forces for 31 years from 1951 to his retirement in 1982. Don completed his basic training in Petawawa and Chilliwack before being deployed to Korea in 1953 as part of the 59th Field Squadron Engineers and has always proudly represented the Korea veterans at Remembrance Services. Don was initially posted at Griesbach in Edmonton after returning from Korea. Don was later stationed in Ottawa, Newfoundland, Kingston, Kamloops, and finally Red Deer (Penhold). One of Don’s proudest moments was visiting Korea in 2013 with his son Doug as part of the official Commonwealth Forces celebration of the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Armistice.
Don was an avid golfer, curler and loved to play cards, any excuse to spend time with his many friends and his beloved family. He was a consummate reader and a formidable sparring partner in any debate. Yet Don was always kind and he valued connection with others above all else. Don always kept his friends and family close and he will be missed.
Don was recently honored as Red Deer’s 2020 Honorary Senior Citizen of the year.
Don has four children Dawn Harrison (Kevin), Darryl Holloway (Rhonda), Denise Holloway (Emil Pellicer), and Doug Holloway (Layla), five grandchildren, Ben Holloway (Eyar Baraness), Erica Holloway, Nuria Pellicer, Elissa Harrison (Wade Stoochnoff), Rachel Krystopowicz (Kevin) and four great-grandchildren, Amira Stoochnoff, Koen Stoochnoff, Simon Krystopwicz, and Elias Krystopwicz. Don also has three stepchildren Leslie Pollock, Laurie Martin (Peter), Shellie Hawkes (Don), five grandchildren, Kyla Ross (Kurtis), Jace Martin (Taylor Ferguson), Andie Hawkes (Kent MacDougall), Mallorie Salter (Nathan), and Sylvie Hawkes, and three great-grandchildren Lyric and Troyen Ross, and Isla Salter. Don is predeceased by his Mother Isabella Holloway, his Daughter Dawn Harrison and his son-in-law Peter Martin.
The details for a Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date.
