Dieka (Dorothy) Loonstra
(nee Vissia)
Dorothy Loonstra was born in Friesland, Netherlands, on September 30, 1935, to Jan and Hinke Vissia. She went home to be with her Heavenly Father on February 21, 2022, at the age of 86.
We mourn the loss of our loving wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, sister-in-law, aunt and friend on this day, but remember back to the wonderful memories we have made with her.
Dorothy was predeceased by her first husband, Bill Weening, daughter, Sherry Lynn Loonstra, two older siblings, Harry Vissia and Hilda de Haan, brothers-in-law, John de Haan and John Stevenson, along with other family and friends.
She will be loving remembered by her husband, Gatze Loonstra, who took care of her over the last few years. She will also be remembered by her siblings: Ron (Willie), Gerry (Cheryl), Mike (Juliette), Theo (Alice), Linda, Judy (Jim), Helen, and Nick; her children Frank (Darlene), Cornelia (Yolunda), and Derek (Lynette) as well as her grandchildren Heidi (Will), Jeffery (Melissa), Melissa (Mike), CJ and Noah along with great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends.
A Celebration of Dorothy’s life will be held for her family and friends on March 3, 2022, at 1:30 pm at First Christian Reformed Church, Red Deer.
Our Mother, and grandmother, was the most faithful lady we know. Never wavering in her faith journey, she was a strong example of living in Christ. She loved to crochet, and play games, like cards and memory. She was always ready to play with anyone that would ask. It was her way of being together and enjoying each other’s company.
Dorothy was a loving, caring, and strong woman. She was strong in her faith and taught us a lot about how to be a good Christian.
She also was very accepting and CJ, one of her grandchildren, talked about how they were so glad that they were able to share a part of themself, their sexuality and gender identity, with their grandmother and be accepted fully for who they are.
We all loved Dorothy so much and will miss her a lot. Remembering all the memories and fun/sad times that we shared, but also glad that she is resting well with her Heavenly Father with no pain or suffering. Dancing with joy with her family and friends who have passed and preparing a place for us when we join her in the future.
