It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Deana Margaret Thompson on March 13, 2025, at the age of 64. Born on December 3, 1960, in Hudson Bay, Saskatchewan, Deana touched the lives of all who knew her with her boundless kindness, fierce loyalty, and a strong sense of justice.
Deana’s life was one of service and compassion. Early in her career, she worked for women’s outreach before becoming a registered psychiatric nurse. She continued to dedicate herself to helping others, working in various charitable roles and ultimately spending her later years as a health care aide. Her caring nature and unwavering dedication to those in need left a lasting impact on her family, friends, colleagues, and the communities she served.
Deana was a woman of simple joys. She had a love for red wine, Stephen King novels, bad reality television, and spirited games of cribbage. A collector of antiques, she found beauty in the past and in the stories they told. Above all, Deana cherished the time spent with her friends and family, always ready with a joke or a kind word, and always standing up for the little guy.
Born in Hudson Bay, Saskatchewan, Deana’s childhood saw her living in various small towns across central Canada, where she made lasting memories. She spent her twenties in Alberta, her thirties in Saskatchewan, and returned to Alberta in her forties, where she remained. Through all the places she lived, she remained a constant beacon of love and joy to her four children: Jason, Sara, Sabastien, and Sunny, all of whom loved her dearly.
Deana was predeceased by her beloved spouse, Rene Claude Harmgardt, her parents, Homer Thompson and Rose Simpson, as well as her siblings Adiranne and Alfred Thompson. She is survived by her children, Sabastien Thompson, Sunny Traverse, and Jason Carpenado, as well as her grandchildren, Taylor Willford, Hunter Ripley, Elizabeth Farley, and Payton Maggie Jones. She is also survived by her siblings Ken Thompson, Lyle Thompson, Gelores Glen, and Elfie Howard.
Her dear friends, Joel Czarny, Bernadette Tamang, Sharon Morigeau, and Leigh Landry will always remember her warmth, humor, and the joy she brought to their lives.
We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to Sharon Morigeau, who spent Deana’s final day with our family, offering her comfort and presence in her last moments. We also wish to thank the staff at Red Deer Regional Hospital, whose professionalism and compassion provided our family with the dignity and strength we needed during this difficult time. Our nurse, in particular, offered kindness that we will forever appreciate.
Deana was proud of her Métis heritage, and in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made make a donation to their Métis or indigenous charity of their choice.
Deana’s legacy of kindness, strength, and unwavering love will continue to live on in the hearts of her family and all those who knew her. She will forever be remembered for her boundless generosity, joyful spirit, and the love she so freely gave.
