The family of David “Dave” Vernon Bakken are saddened to announce his sudden passing on August 20, 2024, in Red Deer, Alberta, at the age of 75. He was born in July of 1949, in Galahad, Alberta, and lived in Camrose and Edmonton, before putting down roots in Red Deer.
Dave spent many of his early years farming and developing his business acumen. He then moved to Red Deer in 1978 and opened a welding fabrication shop, and with his skillset and ingenuity he developed many successful businesses over the years. From Electro-Weld, to Porto-Weld & Fabrication, to Absolute Fusion Contracting, and then lastly, Major Management. His will and determination turned him into a revered businessman, who made an impression everywhere he went. Dave took pleasure in developing deep bonds and friendships with those he interacted and worked with over the years. He was a man of his word, and respect was something he valued greatly. He was also known for his curiosity, quick wit, warmth, and generous nature. His success in business came from his drive to provide, and moreover, inspire his children. He often spoke of how they were his biggest accomplishment and largest success in life.
Dave loved classic cars, riding motorcycles, building, repairing and creating in his shop, and spending time with his family and friends. He brought joy, laughter, and light to everyone around him and was very community oriented. He was always willing to lend a hand or an ear to those in need. He loved connecting with others and filled his life with cherished friendships, to which he made many lasting memories. Dave was a man who wore many hats and was passionate about making ideas possible. He had a natural talent and drive for creativity and could build anything he put his mind to. He was also an intellectual, who used the variety of skills he learned over the years to excel in both his personal and professional life.
Dave will be deeply missed by his sons Michael and Jerrett; daughter Marla; grandsons Anthony and Ethan; and the mother of his children, Maureen. Also left to mourn are his brother Gerry; Ruth (George) Knispel; sister-in-law Thelma and a loving circle of friends and family.
He was predeceased by his sister Vivian, eldest brother Donald (Hazel); sister-in-law Rose, and parents Carl and Helene, as well as many treasured friends and family members.
