David Edwin Arthur Miller
May 10, 1953 – October 8, 2022
With very heavy hearts we must announce that David Edwin Arthur Miller passed away on Saturday, October 8, 2022, at the age of 69. David was a beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, and grandfather. David is survived by his wife of nearly 40 years, Judy; their three children, Alyssa, Sarah (Corby), and Ben; his five grandchildren, Lindsey, Elodie, Hazel, Aubrey, and William; his three sisters, Susan (Dennis), Sally, and Linda (Brian); his sisters-in-law, Doreen, Pam (Brent), Lorna (Greg), Wanda (Jason); and eleven nieces and nephews. David was predeceased by both of his parents, Ernest and Elsie, his older brother Gerry, and his parents-in-law, Ed and Mabel.
David was born and raised in Vancouver and was the youngest of five children. He attended UBC and in 1977 earned a degree of Bachelor of Applied Science in Chemical Engineering. Engineering brought him to the Methanex plant (then AGCL) in Medicine Hat, Alberta, where in 1979 he met his future wife while she was working as a summer student. After they married in January of 1983, they had the opportunity to move to New Zealand for three years so that Dave could be the Supervising Process Engineer in the design and start-up of the Petralgas petrochemical plant. Their oldest daughter, Alyssa, was born shortly before moving back to Canada in 1986. Upon returning to Canada, Dave resumed work at Methanex. Judy and David’s following two children, Sarah and Ben, were born in Medicine Hat in 1988 and 1990. In 1991, the opportunity to transfer to Red Deer presented itself and they were happy to move to where they could be closer to family. Dave would spend the rest of his career in Red Deer with Nova Chemicals until retiring in 2018.
As a boy, the yearly summer vacation was a fond memory. His family would pile into the car and head out – Dave’s seat was often in the back window. They camped, fished, and swam in the freezing cold lakes and rivers of B.C. Dave carried on this tradition enjoying family beach vacations in Mexico and Maui, where he could go boogieboarding and rest his feet in the warm sand. He spent most summers taking his children camping at Okanagan Lake with his sister, Linda, her family, and some family friends. He loved a project and was often tinkering with anything, in order to make it just a little bit better than it was when he found it. In recent years, Dave spent summers golfing, watching the CFL, and filling up the kiddie pool with warm water for his grandchildren. He was a kid at heart himself, so giving the kids a fun place to play made him happy. During the winter he liked to spend evenings watching hockey, playing strategic board games, and completing challenging puzzles.
A memorial service for David will be held at 1:00pm on Friday, October 28, 2022 at St. Luke’s Anglican Church in Red Deer. All are welcome to attend. We would like to extend our thanks to all of the caring and hard working healthcare staff in Red Deer and Edmonton who cared for David over the last few months. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Dave’s honour to Crohn’s and Colitis Canada or Red Deer Hospice Society. To leave condolences for the family, please visit: www.reddeerfuneralhome.com
