Clare Victoria Faria, daughter of the late Anna Rosaria Faria and Felicio Faria, passed away at the Extendicare facility, on Nov 27 th, at the age of 89 years. Clare is the sister of Millie D’Costa and Alex D’Costa of Red Deer, Alberta and Philomena Fernandes and Joaquim Fernandes of Flin Flon Manitoba and late brothers Carmo Faria and Wenceslaus Faria. She leaves behind many nephews and one niece.
Clare was blessed, born within reach of the pristine beaches, emerald palms and tranquil waves of Sangolda, Goa on the west coast of India. At only 9 days old, Clare was adopted into our family when her biological mother passed away shortly after childbirth.
She was the oldest of the five children in the Faria clan, and with the utmost of love and care she nurtured all of us siblings through to adulthood and well into the lives of each of our own children as well! She taught us all kindness, gentleness and affection by her example, and found a passion for cooking. With Goa being a Portuguese colony, she excelled in the art fusing Portuguese with Indian dishes, with her favorite dish being “Sorpotel”, that she remembered the ingredients to in spite of the creeping effects of dementia.
Across three generations of our family, she was more than simply a maternal figure. We cherished her for her faithfulness, affection, persistence and patience toward all of us. Clare was a mom, sister and a forever friend with whom we laughed together, cried together and trusted with our innermost secrets. Her zest for life, adventurous spirit and joyful demeanor was infectious. We will miss her dearly.
