Clara Mitchell (nee Dewald) passed away peacefully at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre on December 22, 2023 at the age of 101 years with family by her side. Clara was born in February of 1922 on the family farm near Macklin, Saskatchewan where she grew up with her eight siblings.
In 1947 Clara moved to Red Deer, Alberta and in 1948 she married Andrew Mitchell. Together they raised five children until Andy’s passing in April of 1975.
After her children were grown, Clara travelled the world, spent time gardening, doted on her grandchildren, baked, walked every day, spent time with neighbours and had coffee with friends, gave to those in need and contributed to her church community. Clara was a devoted Catholic and an active member of her parish. She served with the Catholic Women’s League for over 70 years. She was a volunteer for the Canadian Cancer Society, the Heart Foundation, and an auxiliary member of the Canadian Legion. She loved her family, her community, and always had a welcome and a smile for everyone.
Clara is survived by her children; Lynn (Bob), Linda (Ed), Carolyn (Ron), John (Judy), and Theresa; 16 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren and her sister Barbara. She was predeceased by her husband Andrew, her parents, John and Elizabeth Dewald, and eight siblings, Mary, Katherine, Leo, Magdalene, Peter, Philip, Valentina and Josepha. She was also predeceased by her sisters-in-law Etta, May and Joan.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, January 4, 2024 at 11:00 am at Sacred Heart Church, 5508 – 48A Avenue, Red Deer, Alberta.
