Carol June Wiens (nee Holroyd)
December 29, 1944 – May 7, 2025
It is with sadness that we share the passing of our mother, Carol. Mom lived her entire life in the Central Alberta region, beginning with her birth in Rocky Mountain House. She was a young bride, marrying Barry Wiens, who she met at Bible camp, in September of 1962. They had two daughters together. The marriage ended in divorce in 1976. Mom never remarried.
Mom moved to Red Deer, where she took a clerk typist course so that she could support her daughters. Her first job utilized the skills that she acquired. Her next venture was as co-owner of Red Deer Leathercrafts, a franchise of Tandy Leather. Here, she shared her love of sewing and working with leather, creating clothing items for customers, and tooling belts, purses, and wallets. She even created scabbards (for swords) for a Red Deer College production of “The Three Musketeers.” She loved beading and created belt buckles and earrings. When the store closed, Mom took her creative energy to Fanny’s Fabrics. She learned to sew at a young age and was an accomplished seamstress. She could look at something, create a diagram, then a pattern, and sew it with ease. We have so many things that Mom made for each of us! She worked for Convergys following Fanny’s, and ended her employment years with sixteen years at Fabricland. Other creative energies saw her refinishing furniture, flower arranging, crocheting and knitting. She was an avid gardener and loved to putter in her yard. She loved to make chocolates at Christmas to share with those she loved most. She canned fruit and vegetables and made some of the best jam; a particular favorite of ours was wild strawberry, but we were not wild about picking the berries. Other sweet treats included fudge (which never got to the hardened stage), cookies, squares, pies and cakes. Her little fur friend, Topi, one of the many cats she has loved in her life, is missing her so much.
Carol is survived by two daughters: Vydelle Wiens (Ken Bement) and Denise Silk; five grandchildren: David (Mei-Lin) Ward, Sara (Nicholas) Pyper, Kimberleigh (Joel) Carey, Kristi Silk, and Kari Silk (Kyle Rowland); four great-granddaughters: Skyla and Addiline Pyper, and Kezia and Kaci Silk; one brother, David Holroyd; and many friends. She was pre-deceased by her parents, Elbert and Nellie Holroyd; one brother, Lyle Holroyd; and one sister, Fay-Anne Kerrington.
A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, May 15th, at 11:00 am, at Eventide Funeral Home, 4820 45 St., Red Deer, AB. A private interment will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery, Rocky Mountain House, AB.
Thank you to the caring staff at Red Deer Regional Hospital for making Mom’s final days as comfortable as possible.
