Beverly (Bev) Louise Buchwald (nee Cosens) died peacefully at Red Deer Regional Hospital on October 1, 2022 at the age of 90. Bev was born on May 18, 1932 at the Drumheller Municipal Hospital. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Glen (Buck) Bredahl Buchwald, her brother Vance Cosens, sister Lavinia Edwards, and great grandchild Theo Goodkey.
Bev grew up on a farm near Morrin, Alberta, and rode her horse, Trixie, into Michichi for school. By the time she was 15, she was milking more than 16 cows before and after school. Bev attended the Olds School of Agriculture, studying home economics, and this is where she met her beloved husband Glen. After graduation, they farmed in Standard, Settler, and Markerville. In 1956, they relocated to Edmonton for Glen to get his start in real estate, and then relocated to Stettler in 1964. The family eventually settled in Red Deer in 1969, where Bev and Glen founded Remax Real Estate (Central Alberta) Ltd. in 1981 and ran it until their retirement in 1985. In retirement, Bev and Glen devoted their time to various organizations and charities, with special fondness for the Ellis Bird Farm, Sunnybrook Farms, and Red Deer College.
Bev loved having her family home for the holidays and enjoyed laughing at the antics of her children and grandchildren. She was well known as a wonderful baker, and her recipe for brownies with marshmallows and fudge sauce was legendary among the children and their families. Bev was fiercely independent and strong of character. Once Glen was no longer able to remain at home in his elder years, she drove to visit him every day until his passing 3 years later. Bev suffered from fibromyalgia, and only learnt in adulthood of having a broken neck, most likely due to being kicked by a horse at the age of 11. This never slowed down her love of providing for her family and friends, as any visitor to the Buchwald house was warmly welcomed with fresh baking and smiles.
Bev is missed by her children Nancy (John) Little of Leslieville, Vance Buchwald of Nordegg, Lorne (Tanya) Buchwald of Lethbridge, and Grant (Keng) Buchwald of Shanghai, China. Bev had seven grandchildren: Laura of Calgary, Jocelyn of Blackfalds, Thomas and Russell of Leslieville, Brandt of Medicine Hat, Ali of Calgary, and Degan of Shanghai as well as her great grandchildren, Atticus, Bodhi, Callum, and River of Blackfalds, Dakota and Maverick of Leslieville, Emmett and Iain of Medicine Hat, and Quentin of Leslieville.
No funeral or memorial service is immediately planned. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made directly to The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Alberta at 202, 5913-50th Avenue, Red Deer, Alberta T4N 4C4.
