Bertha Leona Poor (Ironstand)

On February 26, 2020, Bertha passed away at the Red Deer Hospice Society where her family had gathered to say good bye.
Bertha was predeceased by her parents, Moses and Katherine, sister Jody (William); brothers Edward, Victor, Frank, Tommy (Blanche), great-grandson Simeon and her beloved son Morris. She will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by her son Evert (Gisele), daughter in-law Judy; Kokum to Taylor (Sim), Michael (Vanessa), Courtney (Silas), Jennifer (Jesse), Stephanie (Kyle), Chad (Holly), Jennifer, and Michele; great-grandchildren Elizabeth, Holden, Joe, Ben, Lily, Avery, Evelyn and Olivia; brother Clifford (Janet), sister in-law Marlene; best friend Rosena, numerous nieces, nephews and many friends.
Bertha was born August 24, 1932 on the Tootinawazibeeng (Valley River) Indian reserve, Manitoba. She was a survivor of the Canadian residential school system in Saskatchewan. As an elder she has spent years in support of the indigenous community in the Red Deer region. Having spent many hours with children in after school programs, Helping Me Grow playschool groups and visits to school and community institutions. She worked with indigenous youth, assisting with liaison programs at Red Deer University and the Red Deer Native Friendship Center. She has sat on local boards and the Red Deer City Indigenous Council. The list of her indigenous involvements and volunteerism are numerous. At eighty-seven years of age she was still active in the community. Kokum Bertha will be greatly missed by her family and all who knew her.
A visitation will be held on Monday March 2 from 7:30-9:00 P.M. at Eventide Funeral Home, 4820, 45 Street, Red Deer, AB.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 7 at 1:00 P.M. at The Salvation Army Church, 4837 54 Street, Red Deer, AB.
