Bert Stang previously of Ponoka passed away at the age of 91 years after a lengthy illness on March 17, 2018 at the Red Deer Hospice.
He was born in Macklin, Saskatchewan on Jan 31, 1927 where the Stang family farmed until they moved to Ponoka in 1942.
As well as grain farming and livestock, Bert and his brothers worked for their father’s carpentry business. They built many barns in the area and a good number of them are still standing today. They also ran a sawmill and lumber yard and cleared many sections of land for themselves and also for other farmers in the area.
Bert also raised horses and was an expert horseman. He spent a lot of time breaking horses and training them to be saddlehorses and also draft horses.
Later he raised pure-bred quarter horses and also had a pair of pinto ponies that he raced in the pony chariot races at many rodeos.
In 1979 Bert married his wife Katherine and instantly became a stepfather to her 4 children and grandfather to, at that time, four grandkids.
This number eventually grew to become nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Bert is lovingly remembered by wife Katherine, and her children Allan Knight (Karen), Leonard Knight (Brenda) and Carolyn Long (Randy). As well as their children Reagan Knight, Angela Sheppard (Rob), Whitney St Arnaud (Scott), Michael Knight, Murray Knight, Tracy Maher, Lisa Long and Ryan Long (Kim). Great Grand children Jessica Kerr, Hannah Long, Logan Maher, Charlotte St Arnaud and Brandon Sheppard. As well as surviving brothers and sisters Albert Stang (Jeannette) Alphonse Stang, Leo Stang (Judy) and Gerogina Morrical (Gordon) and many, many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life luncheon will be held at the Ponoka Legion at 2 o’clock on Mar 23 and friends and family are welcome to attend.
In lieu of cards and flowers we encourage donations be made to the Alberta SPCA.
