Bert Aime Turcotte passed away peacefully on March 15, 2024 after a short battle with terminal brain cancer at the age of 65. He was born in Wainwright to Lionel and Louise Turcotte who lived and farmed near Chauvin, Alberta. Lionel and Louise had nine children, of which Bert was the middle child. They were and still are a very close knit family, and Bert had strong ties to all his brothers and sisters.
Bert and Lorna (Munro) met in 1980 and had a long distance romance which included a lot of driving back and forth between Red Deer and Bonnyville. They were married in 1982 and made their permanent home in Red Deer. Their first born child, Dynelle, arrived in 1985 and Justin arrived 2 years later in 1987. Bert loved his children dearly and was a very proud and supportive Dad who attended all his kids’ sports events over the years. He was a “dance Dad” too, and attended a lot of Dynelle’s dance competitions and recitals. Bert was also proud to be there for Justin when he had his skateboard video premieres and his filmfest documentary premiere in Texas. More recently, he loved attending the grandkids’ activities and sports events too.
Bert was a successful tradesman and later in his career was a respected QA/QC inspector, who worked extensively throughout Alberta. He enjoyed his work and was known for his wealth of knowledge in his field and for mentoring many new tradesmen.
He took an early retirement in 2015, and enjoyed those years with Lorna traveling and life as a snowbird in Arizona. He had many passions which included playing golf, hiking, pickleball, RVing, playing poker and… he was an avid Blue Jays, Flames, and Stampeders fan. Family came first and he was an important role model and mentor to his children and grandchildren. His life may have been shortened by cancer, but he made the best of it and packed in a lot of “living life to the fullest” moments with many fun activities and adventures over the years.
Bert is survived by his wife Lorna, their children Dynelle (Sean) Dunn, Justin Turcotte (Jacey Larochelle) and four grandchildren: Aiden and Ethan Dunn, Poppy and Finlay Turcotte. He is also survived by his eight siblings and all of their families: Faye (Leon) Mercier, Dianne (Jim) Berling, Guy (Dawn) Turcotte, Neil (Sue) Turcotte, Joelle (Walker) Rogers, Celine (Barry) Wahlberg, Luc (Brenda) Turcotte, Lynette McDonald and Bert’s sister in law, Marlene Jabalee (Tracy Martin). Bert was predeceased by his parents, Lionel and Louise Turcotte, step father Mike Hrynchuk and his in-laws, Cliff and Kay Munro.
A celebration of Bert’s life will be held on Sunday, March 24 at 1:00 pm at the Eventide Funeral Home, 4820 45 Street, Red Deer, Alberta.
The hospice where Bert spent the last few months of his life was a comforting, beautiful place with wonderful care by a very special team of skilled hospice staff.
