It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Anja Liisa Cawthorn at the age of 82, on March 8, 2026, at home, surrounded by her daughter and her loved ones. Our dear mother, gramma, and friend received her angel wings. Although you are both physically here, your memories are forever entrenched in our hearts.
Born in Cottbus, Germany, on August 16, 1943, to Kirsti Similä (Suolahti). Both she and her mother immigrated to Canada after the war. Settling in Calgary, Alberta. It was in Calgary where she met the love of her life and soulmate, Don. Their life moved to Red Deer, where they spent the rest of their life. Mom was a graphic artist and a remedial massage therapist by trade. Growing up in music and the theatre, moms love for music was also a pastime, playing the cello for the Red Deer Symphony Orchestra and Edmonton Philharmonic Orchestra. She was passionate about animals and nature, as evidenced by the many animals that she looked after, both of her own as well as those that found their way out to the country. She and Dad created a homestead oasis in Red Deer County, which was their pride and joy.
Mom (Anja) leaves to remember her devoted daughter Joan, grandchildren Kyra, Matthew, Brooke, and Anna (Jonny) and great-grandson Lukas, as well as her extended family and friends.
This is not goodbye; this is a thank you. Thank you for coming into our lives and giving us such joy and memories. Until we see each other again, we love you!
As per her request, there will be no funeral. Condolences to Anja’s family may be emailed to meaningful@telus.net. Please indicate “Anja Cawthorn” in the subject line.
