On a beautiful sunny Sunday morning July 10th, 2022 with family by his side, Mal passed away peacefully at the Red Deer Regional Hospital after a very brief illness.
He was predeceased by his parents, Allan and Lilly, and his brothers David, Gordon and sister Marion. He will be lovingly remembered by so many for his caring, kind, and huge heart. Survived by his wife of 64 years Lorraine his son Allan (Janice), daughter Shirley (Paul), grandchildren Jared (Jade), Cassandra (Scott), Katherine (Will), John, and Mark; great grandchildren Hunter, Paityn, Ollie, Cooper and Grace. Mal is also survived by his brothers Doug and Jay (Karen) as well numerous nieces and nephews.
Mal was born in Camrose, Alberta, attended Camrose Lutheran College where he actively competed jumping off big ramps with long skinny skis. After College, he worked as an electrician in Edmonton and Calgary. In 1958 Mal married Lorraine Peterson. In 1962, they moved to Red Deer to start an electrical contracting business, Triple A Electric Ltd. now a third-generation family business. Mal provided decades of mentorship for the Triple A team as well as fellow volunteers in the community. Mal, Lorraine and his son Allan founded Triple A Developments Ltd. which developed several commercial properties in Red Deer. A proud Rotarian, Mason and past Grand Patron of Alberta of the Order of Eastern Star. Presently he was the Grand Representative to Australia in Alberta. Mal was a dedicated volunteer at many organizations including the past president of the Westerner, Red Deer Shrine Club, Red Deer Construction Association, he was heavily involved with the construction of the Centrium (on time and under budget), an active Optimist Club and Elks member for many years. Giving back to the community was a principal he believed in.
Mal loved his hobby of raising horses, ring mastering and showing Arabian horses. He was a hunter, golfer, commercial fisherman, hobby farmer and a very hard worker who always knew who was boss (Mal). He was always active with the choirs and sang with the quartet at the Lutheran College and at Lutheran Church in California. Mal was a full fledged snowbird and spent many winters at their home in California. While he enjoyed the south, his happy place was at the farm enjoying the outdoors.
He was a wonderful Papa to his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was a true storyteller, always had a joke, and was up to debate almost anything and if you were lucky you could listen and see the world from Mal’s point of view. May a little light be left on for him, although he would likely debate you and want them off.
Special thanks to the staff at Red Deer Regional Hospital specifically Dr. Green, nurses Carissa, Elizabeth and Carol.
A gathering to celebrate his life will take place at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church in Red Deer on Friday July 15, 2022 at 2p.m.
In Lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Mal’s honour may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Alberta or any other local charity of the donors’ choice.
