Derek Allan Deon aka Phoeinixxx MII Van Der Kooij tragically lost his life on Thursday, April 13, 2023, at his home in Red Deer, Alberta at the age of 33 years. Suffering from schizophrenia, Derek had been trapped in his own body and mind for the better part of his physical life. Growing up in Canmore Alberta, Derek loved to live life loud; he enjoyed displaying his love for all cultures by wearing his collection of headdresses, wigs, hats, and other intricate articles. Derek dressed lavishly without a crease or button or hair out of place, then would head proudly into the public, where he enjoyed conversing with people. Derek was passionate about visual art and spent his time staging scenes for photography. Derek was also a political advocate for human rights and equality; he spent a lot of time studying the events around the Holocaust and other genocides. Derek was a spiritual soul and enjoyed purchasing lottery tickets where his chosen numbers were not for the big win but to communicate with his spiritual friends and followers. He would wait patiently for the number draw to decipher what the spirits had to say. Derek’s family is extremely saddened by the physical loss of his beautiful self but relieved that he can begin his eternal existence in peace with many friends who have patiently been waiting for him. Derek will be remembered lovingly by his parents, Vernon & Jane Deon; his sister, Shannon (Michael) Gibson; his nephew Harrison Gibson, and Uncle John Deon. A Private Service will be held for Derek at a later date. Condolences, memories and photos may be shared and viewed at www.parklandfuneralhome.com
