Mr. Joel Kenneth Sveinson passed away surrounded by his loving family at the Foothills Medical Centre in Caglary, Alberta on March 13, 2025 at the age of 39 years.
Husband, Dad, Brother, Son, Grandson, Nephew, Uncle and fun-loving, adventurous, loyal friend to so many. We will miss his big smile, his laughter and his love of life. Joel was joyful, mischievous, kind, daring, loved the outdoors, had so much love for his friends and family, and loved his girls more than anything – his wife Suzie, and his daughters, Skyler, Layla and Summer. When he was born, his family lived on the Sveinson family farm near Markerville with his parents Dan and Denise Sveinson, and his siblings, Landon and Denae. Later, they built a house on an acreage down the road beside the Medicine River. He went to school at Spruce View and then attended Sylvan Lake High School. Growing up, he played hockey, swam competitively, rode horses, camped with his family, fished, and learned to surf with his Dad and his brother Landon. When he was laid up with knee surgeries in his early teens, he watched snowboarding videos and etched the movements in his brain, so that after only one or two times on the
mountain he looked like a pro! He had many snowboarding adventures with buddies and got his whole family on skis and boards. They have season’s passes to RCR and have spent many weekends in Kimberly and other mountains.
Joel had a lot of pursuits, getting his scuba diving certification and his private and commercial pilot’s license. He built beautiful longboard skateboards, and he was an excellent skateboarder.
Joel met the love of his life, Suzie Mercier, when living in Red Deer. They moved to an acreage next door to Joel’s grandparents, Ken and Marie Sveinson, twelve years ago to help his grandparents, and also to fulfil their dream of living in the country and raising their children there. On many summer weekends you would see Joel out riding horses in the fields with his girls.
He worked as a Millwright at Nova in Joffre and had many friends there. Joel didn’t live to work; he worked to live. He was an avid hunter, mountain biker, hiker, camper, snowboarder, loved to work on old vehicles and he always made it a priority to include his girls in everything and was passionate about passing on his knowledge to them.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Suzie, his three daughters, Skyler, Summer and Layla, his parents, Dan and Denise Sveinson, his brother, Landon (Aida) Sveinson and their son, Leo, his sister Denae (Rick) Marz and their children, Madison and Ethan, his grandmother Marie Sveinson, grandparents Murl and Maudie Hill and many special aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, cousins, and just so, so many friends. Joel was predeceased by his grandfather, Kenneth Sveinson.
Joel gave the gift of life by donating his organs so that others might live on.
In lieu of flowers, if desired, donations may be made toward RESP’s for Joel’s girls, Skyler, Layla and Summer. If you want to contribute you can e-transfer to Sveinsongirls@gmail.com and it will be donated.
