KACHMAR, Shaun
1977 – 2026
Shaun Kachmar of Blackfalds, Alberta, passed from this life on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, at the age of 48 years. To describe Shaun as “complex” would be an understatement. He lived a life that was often a paradox – capable of great kindness yet frequently caught in the unkind grip of illness that created a difficult reality of himself and those closest to him.
We choose to remember Shaun not for the shadows that followed him, but for the moments of light in between – his love of camping, of music, cooking and cars and, of course, his dog, Penny, who misses him terribly. Shaun is finally at rest, free from the constraints of a body that did not always serve him well. Our family finds peace knowing that the struggle is over, for him and for those who stood by him. While his path was marked by health complications that often tested the bonds of those who loved him, it was also defined by the unwavering, fierce devotion of his mother, Wanda Hillary.
Our family wishes to publicly honour the incredible efforts of Wanda. Her patience and generosity provided him with a safety net that lasted a lifetime. She was his teacher, his mentor, his best friend and, finally, his caregiver and lifeline for fifteen years.
Shaun is lovingly remembered by a family who, though spread far apart, never stopped wishing for his peace; His doting mother, Wanda Hillary; son, Davin; stepdad, Eugene Cherewyk and stepbrother, Justin; Auntie Diane McMinn (Dennis) and cousins, Dean and Daralyn; Auntie Wendy Crawford (Jack) and cousins, Justin and Hillary. He was pre-deceased by his maternal grandmother (1977) and grandfather (1988). Shaun’s family would like to express their sincere gratitude to everyone for their kindness, support and care shown during his illness.
A Private Family Service was held in Shaun’s honour. If desired, memorial tributes are welcome directly to Diabetes Canada at www.diabetes.ca or to the Kidney Foundation of Canada at www.kidney.ca.
