HUTCHINGS, Ted
1971 – 2026
Mr. Theodore “Ted” Hutchings passed away near Golden, British Columbia, on Thursday, February 5, 2026 at the age of 55 years. Ted was born in Yorkton, Saskatchewan, and later moved with his family to the Edmonton–Sherwood Park area. He graduated from Bev Facey Composite High School and went on to earn his degree from the University of Alberta, Faculty of Education, where he was awarded the M.E. Lazerte Gold Medal for the highest general proficiency in his final two years of study. Ted made Red Deer, Alberta his home, where he began his teaching career with Red Deer Public Schools. He married his beloved wife, Lori (née Miller), in 1995. Ted and Lori completed their family with the birth of Connor in 2000 and Jeffrey in 2002. Ted taught at Eastview Middle School, Glendale Middle School, and Grandview Elementary, serving as both a teacher and administrator. After 20 years with Red Deer Public Schools, he became Principal of Delburne Centralized School, where he served for nine years until 2022. He then moved to Innisfail Middle School as Principal for two years before deciding to step away from administration. He returned to what he loved most — working directly with students — as a teacher and career counsellor at Penhold Crossing Secondary School. Ted often spoke about how much hockey contributed to his life. He played minor hockey with the Strathcona Warriors and went on to play in the WHL with the Portland Winterhawks and Lethbridge Hurricanes before finishing with the Sherwood Park Knights. He later coached for decades with the Red Deer College Kings, Red Deer Minor Hockey, and several hockey schools. He also volunteered as an off-ice official with the Red Deer Rebels and at various Hockey Alberta events. Ted loved spending time outdoors — fly fishing, camping, hiking, skiing, sitting around the campfire with friends, and taking his two beloved dogs, Downie and Finn, out after work. He loved all music and was a lifelong fan of The Tragically Hip and Corb Lund. Ted is lovingly remembered by his wife of 30 years, Lori Hutchings; his two sons Connor Hutchings (Fiona Chandler) of Edmonton, Alberta, and Jeffrey Hutchings (Sydney Voisey) of Red Deer, Alberta; his father, Stewart Hutchings of Devon, Alberta; his sister, Heather Hutchings of Sherwood Park, Alberta; and many nieces, nephews, colleagues, and loyal friends. Ted was predeceased by his mother, Sharon Hutchings; his father-in-law, Ken Miller; and his grandparents, Harry and Jean Link, C.T.A. (Ted), and Shirley Hutchings. A Prayer Service will be held at Gaetz Memorial United Church, 4758 – 50 Street, Red Deer, on Thursday, February 19, 2026, at 7:30 p.m. A Celebration of Ted’s Life will be held at École Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School (main gym), 4204 – 58 Street, Red Deer, on Friday, February 20, 2026, at 1:00 p.m., with The Reverend Leila Currie, officiating. To honour Ted’s love of hockey, the family welcomes everyone to wear their favourite hockey jersey.
