It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Mr. Rand ‘Randy’ Saponja, from a tragic motor vehicle collision, on Sunday, July 11, 2021 at the age of 54 years. Randy was born and raised in Calgary. He was a graduate of the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology, in Power Engineering, and moved to Red Deer, Alberta, to work for Nova Chemicals at their complex at Joffre. Randy recently retired from Nova, after thirty-one years; and was looking forward to spending more time with his son, Evan, family and friends. Randy was passionately involved in Evan’s hockey and other activities. He had a life-long interest in body building; and had numerous hobbies involving all sizes of motorized vehicles; including a collection of RC cars and boats. He loved spending time in Sicamous, at the family cabin. He was loved by all and will be sorely missed. Randy will be lovingly remembered by his son, Evan, his parents, Walter and Carol Saponja, his brother, Jeff (Susanne) Saponja, his sister, Jill (Kelly) Rathje, and his niece, and nephews, Jenna, Ryan, Luke and Thomas. In lieu of flowers, if desired, Memorial Donations in Randy’s honor may be made directly to the Heart and Stroke Foundation at www.heartandstroke.ca. A Celebration of Randy’s Life will be held at Parkland Funeral Home, 6287 – 67 A Street (Taylor Drive), Red Deer, Alberta on Saturday, July 24, 2021 at 1:00 p.m.
