”Miss Bulmer” or ”Mousey” was born on September 13, 1963, at the Vermilion Hospital to Jim and Sharon Bulmer of Minburn, Alberta. She was the apple of her dad’s eye. Super cute and super smart and could sing songs, knowing all the words by the time she was one year old. After experiencing her first epileptic seizure at six months old, she was taken in to Vermilion Hospital to later be diagnosed with Epilepsy. From a very early age, Shelby experienced seizures which would continue to affect her mentally and physically. Not letting anything stop her, she would still run, play and sing to her hearts content. After realizing that her welfare and care would be extremely difficult from home, she was taken to Red Deer’s Michener Centre at five years old, where they could properly administer to her daily needs. She came back home for few months but then was admitted on a fulI-time basis. She was always brought home each year after that for Easter, Christmas and summer holidays, which she enjoyed immensely. She never forgot a face or name and it seemed like she tagged everyone with a cute nick-name. Many have stuck to this day. She had her favorite friends and especially her favorite food items. Her treats were prominent in her life and every family member would make sure that she always had a good stock of Smarties, Cheezies and Pepsi when they visited. She would guard each and every Smartie, and heaven help you if you thought you might steal one! Her temper was also something she could make you very aware of. She didn’t tolerate teasing and she would literally chase you down and get her treats back because as in her words “it had her name on it”. Sports played another important part in Shelby’s life. She loved hockey and softball, and partaking in Michener’s sport days. Playing tug of war and having her mom and dad cheer her on made her team doubly strong. Of course she was always the winner. She insisted that she was the one with the white helmet when playing hockey, or ask emphatically if that was her wearing the white helmet. We’d always agree whole heartedly that yes that was her for sure! The staff and caregivers at her home would be amazed that no matter what the sport — if “Oh Canada” was being played on TV — everyone better sing and “make attention” because she would sing with such enthusiasm and the biggest smile on her face… it would make everyone proud to be Canadian. She loved her family and had two very special friends; Laura-Lee and Lorinda-Faye who would visit her and absolutely make her day! They were like two more sisters to her. She hated dogs and dolls and loved kitty cats and horses. Even when it came to the day of her loss of speech she could always let you know where she stood with her likes and dislikes. From Red Deer to Lloydminster and back again, she had every cow, bale and horse pegged as her Uncle Dwight’s. Ordering fast food while at drive-thru window was always the same precise order…hamburger and a “banilla” milkshake please. Shelby made us laugh and cry over everything that she conquered. Dancing a slow waltz with her brother, hammering nails into a 2 X 4 almost straight, to all her nicknames she gave everyone, her singing at the top of her lungs, the multiple re-coops after spending time in hospital because of bad seizures or pneumonia, and to yes even swearing in the most unbelievable places. Shelby could make you see the funny side of most things. Even toppling herself and her Gramma on the floor, after trying to sit on her knee while perched just on the arm of it. Shelby was a true inspiration as to how physically tough she could be. She battled more health issues than ten people together. Somehow through it all, she always had a smile at the end of the day for you. It was almost like she was making sure we were okay, by giving us giant grin from ear to ear. Heaven gained another angel on February 25th, when Shelby fought her last fight. Covid and complications were just too much this time. She leaves to mourn: Mother (Sharon); Sister (Tracy Blanchard and family); Brother (Jim and family), niece (Meagan Bulmer), niece Krista Bondy and husband Matt, and two nephews (Chance and Brett Harvie), one great-niece and three great-nephews, along with numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. A special mention to two very loved Friends Laura-Lee & Lorinda-Faye Jeffery. She also had an extended family at Michener Centre that treated her like one of their own. Shelby was predeceased by her father (Jim) and grandparents, but now is free to be with them all, to sing as loud as she can, all her favorite songs.
