It is with profound sadness that we share that Rob ‘Skip’ Meckling passed away unexpectedly, at his home in Red Deer, Alberta on Monday, April 17, 2023 at the age of 61 years. Rob was born on May 5, 1961, in Montreal, Quebec. In the early 1970’s, the Meckling Family settled in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. Rob played the drums as a boy but, as a natural athlete, he turned to sports and grew up competing in cycling, gymnastics, baseball, volleyball, and basketball. His nickname ‘Skip’ originated on the Basketball Court on account of his manner of ‘skipping’ down the court, later earning the title “Mr. Volleyball” for his life-long love and dedication to volleyball. Rob spent his life immersed in sport and recreation, as an athlete, a coach, an official, and as an administrator. He was a fixture on the Volleyball Court, not only where he lived and raised his family, in Yellowknife and Red Deer, but across the North and Central Alberta, most notably Olds. He coached competitive High School, College, and Club Volleyball for over thirty-five years, and volunteered on many local, provincial, and national committees and boards. The list of his awards is long, his trophies and banners are many, and his medal chest is heavy; however, it was never the accolades, but the memories with teammates, players and their parents, friends, and colleagues that he held most dear. Rob loved WWII movies, M*A*S*H* re-runs, and Monday Night Football; BBQs, and well-done tenderloin steak, pizza, fried macaroni with Maggi, red wine, and Red Rose tea; college basketball, sport memorabilia, SWAG, and all things volleyball; and dogs. Rob will be lovingly remembered by his daughters, Bree (and her wife, Jenne) and Abby; his sister, Michele and her daughter, Marika (her daughter, Charlie) and her son, Taylor; and a host of friends and colleagues. Rob was predeceased by his parents, Jack and Christine Meckling. A Celebration of Rob’s Life will be arranged for a later date in Red Deer, Alberta. Rob’s ashes will be interred with his parents in Yellowknife, at the place he called “Home”, forever under the dance of the northern lights and in the land of the midnight sun. In lieu of flowers, if desired, Memorial Donations in Rob’s honour and keeping with Rob’s love of sport and community, donations may be made directly to KidSport Canada at www.kidsportcanada.ca.
