Mary Doris Rasmussen (nee Badger) was born on October 20, 1958 in Calais (Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation). Peter Cunningham and Nancy Badger were the proud parents of a beautiful baby girl. Mary had five siblings; Alice, Annie, Marion, Jean and James. She grew up in Little Smokey and Valleyview, Alberta. She attended school in Valleyview and St. Stephens. Her line was often “Of course I’m smart! I went to St. Stephens!”. Mary had a few nicknames: Tootsie, Mrs. Roper and of course “The Queen”. Her dad called her “The Queen” and when she was misbehaving, her mom called her My “Yatts SeeW Queen” which means ugly queen. Mary married the love of her life, Robert ‘Bob’ Rasmussen. They made their home just outside of Valleyview, Alberta. In 2011, they moved to Red Deer, Alberta. They became parents to three children, Julie, Melissa, and Kyle. They were also blessed with four grandchildren, Catlyn, Kaiden, Paige and Aiden. Mary was over the moon when her great granddaughter, Rowyn was born. She was so proud of her family. Family was everything to her. Mary was a hard worker throughout her life. She worked in the hospitality industry as a cook, waitress, dishwasher, room attendant, and laundry lady. Being a wife and a mother was by far her favourite job. She enjoyed her family immensely. Mary was a social butterfly and chatted with everyone and anyone who had the time to talk. She definitely inherited this from her father, Peter. Mary loved to joke around; lots of laughs were had. Never a dull moment with her. She absolutely had a smile that lit up the room. Mary was predeceased by her parents, Peter and Nancy; her siblings, Alice, Annie, and James. She was also predeceased by her loving husband, Bob. His endearing name for Mary was “My Darling”. Mary started her journey to the spirit world on Monday, August 31, 2026 in Red Deer, Alberta. She leaves to mourn her children, grandchildren, great granddaughter, siblings and godmother/aunt. As well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Mary will be truly missed, and the world is a little dimmer without her in it. Rest Easy, your job here is done. A Celebration of Mary’s Life was held at the Parkland Funeral Home, 6287 – 67a Street (Taylor Drive), Red Deer, Alberta on Friday, September 11, 2026 at 12:00 p.m. There will be a public visitation two hours prior to her life celebration.
