It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mr. Eibert John ‘Ed’Wassenaar, after an incredibly courageous battle with cancer, at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre on Friday, September 11, 2020 at the age of 63 years. Ed was born in Ontario on June 30, 1957, to Jack (Tjerk) and Effie (Aafje) Wassenaar. Ed was the middle child in the Wassenaar family, a brother to Nancy and Hank. He was always independent, charismatic, passionate and full of love. As a child, he loved to be in nature and care for plants and animals, a love which would remain throughout his life. He was always hard-working, dedicated and was a gifted horticulturalist, who took pride in every job, big or small. Ed enjoyed working on his homestead, visiting Puerto Vallarta and spending time with his loved ones. He loved being an ‘Opa’ to Amelia, having fires in the evening, listening to an array of music, and having great conversations, while enjoying an Old Mill. He loved fishing, swimming in the ocean and his favourite colour was orange – very fitting for a proud Dutchman. Ed will be lovingly remembered by his dear mother, Aafje Wassenaar-Bosje, his sister, Nancy (Wally) Andres, his brother, Hank (Janeth) Wassenaar, his amor and partner, Adriana Paz-Shields, his daughter, Rachel Adair (Devon) and his granddaughter, Amelia and his son, Shaun Goodfallow and family. Ed will also be sadly missed by numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews, cousins and many friends, near and far, whom he loved like family. Ed was predeceased by his beloved wife, Mariann Wassenaar (nee Cunningham) in 2012 and his father, Jack (Tjerk) Wassenaar in 2009. Ed was not a man of formality and wished to have a Celebration of Life on his homestead, for all who can come together to honor the Great Man that Ed Wassenaar was. He will be deeply missed and forever in our hearts. If desired Memorial Donation’s in Ed’s honor may be made directly to the Red Deer Hospice Society, 99 Arnot Avenue, Red Deer, Alberta, T4R 3S6 or at www.reddeerhospice.com.
