It is with heavy hearts that the family of Mr. Mervin ‘Merv’ Garrick Klaus announce his passing in Red Deer, Alberta on Friday, April 19, 2024 at the age of 68 years. Merv was born on December 23, 1955, in Portage La Prairie, Manitoba. Most of his years growing up were on the family farm in Bentley, Alberta. He moved to Red Deer with his family in 1972, where he later married and had his son, Troy. Merv was an incredibly social person whose personality lit up the room, as he made friends wherever he went. He was an excellent athlete, and much of his life was centered around sports of all kinds including hockey, fastball, broomball, curling, and golf. Later in life, he volunteered countless hours as a coach where he was able to pass along his love for the game of hockey to many others. Merv had a passion for the outdoors and spent lots of time camping, fishing, biking, and rollerblading. He had a very long and fulfilling career for the Alberta Government, as a plumber at Michener Centre. He really did love his work, but as always with him, it was the relationships he made along the way with colleagues and residents that gave him the most satisfaction. Merv will be dearly missed by his son, Troy (Breanna), his brothers, Rick (Judy) and Tom (Rhonda) and his sisters, Karrie and Karen (Rob). Merv was predeceased by his father, Harry; his mother, Myrtle ‘Pat’; his brothers, Wayne and Terry and his sister, Kelly-Ann. There will be an open house style Celebration of Life held at the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 35, 2810 Bremner Avenue, Red Deer, Alberta on Friday, April 26, 2024 from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. We welcome anyone to pop in, share a laugh, and tell some stories about the man who touched so many lives.
