STUART, Carmelanne Mary Theresa
1954–2025
Carmelanne ‘Candy’ Mary Theresa Stuart (neé Power) passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, at the age of 71 years, surrounded by those she loved most. Candy was born to Richard and Anne Power in Deer Lake, Newfoundland and Labrador, on Tuesday, February 2, 1954. She leaves to mourn her devoted husband of 54 years, Dale; her beloved son, Corey (Tamara, Haley, and Ethan); and her cherished daughter, Trina (Cory, Brianna, and Devon). She was a proud and loving Nana to her adored grandchildren and treasured her great-grandchildren, Brynleigh, Serenity, and Deacon, as well as to her loyal little sidekick, Millie. Candy will also be deeply missed by her siblings, Avier, Loyola (Deb), and Sean (Cathy); numerous Stuart-in-laws, many nieces, nephews, and extended family members, and by the countless friends whose lives she touched. At the age of 15, Candy left Holyrood, Newfoundland, and travelled to Alberta in the summer of 1969 to work as a nanny for her sister, Theresa; who lived in Black Diamond, Alberta. One day, Candy and her friend, MaryAnne, were walking down the street as Dale drove by in his dad’s pickup truck. Candy spotted him, told her friend, “I’m going to marry that guy someday”. Shortly after that, she finally met Dale and the rest, as they say, is history. Candy attended nearly every one of her kids and grandkids hockey games, countless ringette, volleyball, baseball games, dance recitals, music performance, and concerts. If someone she loved was involved, she was there… Nana Cheer gear in hand. She doted about her children and grandchildren, telling them often how proud she was of them. A special relationship with each, that also came with a sweet little nickname, that will forever hold fond memories. Candy also loved cheering for her favorite teams, being a devoted Toronto Blue Jays fan, and a season ticket holder for the Red Deer Rebels since 1992. She had an incredible artistic talent and could create a beautiful flower display in minutes. Over the years she crafted countless wedding bouquets, centerpieces, and floral arrangements for family and friends. She loved to craft, often alongside her granddaughters; the girls always had something on the go, and often, Nana got a call in a panic when someone needed something, and she usually had it. And if she didn’t, she would find it. A long-standing family joke was that she must have had a dollar store membership, and that if you couldn’t find something in a local shop or on Amazon, it was probably in a bin in Nana’s basement. Candy was talented in so many ways and had a natural eye for decorating. Christmas was her favorite time of year, and Dale was often recruited, willingly or not, to help set up whatever elaborate display she had planned. Their home was always decorated for every occasion: Halloween, Christmas, Easter, even Valentine’s Day. This past Halloween, her daughter-in-law, Tamara, and granddaughter, Haley, lovingly kept the tradition alive, ensuring Dale and Candy’s home was decorated. Candy also loved her flowers, a passion she inherited from her dad. Her veranda was always filled with blooms, and when she fell ill, Dale and her “Boo” (Brynleigh) made sure she could still enjoy them from her chair in the living room. Candy built a long and meaningful career with the City of Red Deer, beginning in January 1980 and continuing until August 2010. In her 30-year career, Candy encountered many amazing people who became her work family. She later returned in a casual capacity with Public Works and Transportation before officially retiring in March 2015. Even in retirement, she remained deeply connected to the City Hall community. For many years she proudly served as a social planner for the city, a role she continued for the Red Deer City retirees from September 2009 until she fell ill shortly before September 2024. She battled hard, and was such a Warrior Queen, as she was fondly referred to by her golf crew. Candy loved to travel, lots of trips back home to Newfoundland over the years. Special trips with family included Disney World, Disneyland, Ireland, Scotland, Mexico and Hawaii. Dale and Candy attended and helped organize many jam sessions in and around Central Alberta. She loved to dance and was always line dancing, always having fun, always smiling, and always encouraging others to join in. A Celebration of Candy’s life, the party she truly deserved, will be held in the Marquis Room, Harvest Centre Building, Westerner Park, 4847A – 19 Street, Red Deer, Alberta, on Friday, January 30th, from 1:00 P.M~3:00 P.M. A jam session will follow. Candy would have turned 72 this coming year, and she wanted a party, so let’s celebrate her life exactly as she would have wanted. The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the many doctors, nurses, and healthcare professionals who cared for Candy throughout her journey. If desired, memorial donations may be made in Candy’s honor to the Red Deer Hospice Society, 99 Arnot Avenue, Red Deer, AB T4R 3S6.
