Mr. Elwood Donald Johnson ‘Don’ or’ D.J’ passed away peacefully, surrounded by family who loved him, after a short battle with cancer on Tuesday, March 1, 2022 at the age of 68 years. He was born in Taber, Alberta, July 14, 1953, a son to Elmer and Elaine Johnson (Conrad). Don’s family moved to Innisfail, Alberta in 1964. After finishing High School, he moved to Banff to work for Brewster Transport Company as a Tour Bus driver. In 1981, Don started as a Concrete Mixer driver with Burnco Rock Products. He began in Canmore, then in 1986, transferred to their Red Deer plant, retiring in 2016 after thirty-five years. Don treasured his memories of his time as a Skinner at Sunshine and as a driver with Burnco. Working with the vast construction community, he developed an amazing network of lasting friendships. During retirement, he enjoyed a fast friendship with his coffee crew.
Most important to him was his family who he led on so many adventures from the ‘Jasper Odysseys” to the spelunking adventures that have given his children lasting memories and amazing stories to recount to their own children. Don will be lovingly remembered by his wife of forty-six years, Shirley Johnson (Leawood) and his children, Jason (Meg), Jen (Colin) and Andrew (Teresa) and his grandchildren, Broc, Lucia, Kora, Jake, Troy, Jessica, Jovah and Tylen. He raised his children with the same strength of character he demonstrated throughout his life. He loved all his grandchildren and played with them endlessly. He will also be sadly missed by his sisters, Delores McMurren, Barb Hustins, Marion Washbrook (Albert); as well as countless nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws. Don was predeceased by his parents, Elmer and Elaine Johnson and a brother-in-law, Roy McMurren. A Celebration of Don’s Life will be planned for a later date to be announced.
