SUTHERLAND, Brian
1951 – 2025
Brian Sutherland was born August 30, 1951 and passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 30, 2025, at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre, surrounded by his loving family. He is predeceased by his parents, Robert and Doris Sutherland, from Beeton, Ontario. Brian is lovingly remembered by his wife, Margaret Sutherland; three children, Jennifer Sutherland, Marla Bartel, and Kate and Matt Slubik; and his three grandchildren, Jude, Oscar and Hazel Bartel, along with a surviving aunt, Mildred Turnbull, many cousins and friends in Alberta and beyond. After High School Brian heard the call “to go west young man” and came to Edmonton first. He started on an apprenticeship with R. Angus in 1970. While completing his apprenticeship he spent two summers working in Inuvik, and then settled in the Red Deer area, where he spent the rest of his years. Not long after being in Red Deer, he was introduced to skiing. In 1974 he went on a work ski trip where he met his future wife, Margaret. They were married on July 16th, 1976. They enjoyed river boating trips locally and in Mexico and skiing with lifelong friends, before having children. He worked for many years as a Heavy Duty Field Mechanic, he owned two successful businesses and spent his final working years at Hecks Trucking. His dreams of owning mules were completed in 1995, when he headed to the States to collect two and decided to come home with four. “The Mule Man” enjoyed many years with his animals participating in summer parades, sleigh rides, caroling trips, adventures in the mountains and even a TV mini series. After announcing to his work to “take this job and shove it”, he had all the time in the world to mule around, spend time with his grandchildren and loving wife out on his acreage. A Celebration of Brian’s Life will be held at the Frontier Room, Westerner Park, Red Deer, Alberta on Saturday, November 22, 2025 at 1:00 p.m. If desired, Memorial Donations in Brian’s honor may be made directly to the Red Deer Hospice Society at www.reddeerhospice.com or to a Charity of Donor’s Choice.
