Mrs. Birdeen Ollie Sivacoe passed away on Saturday May 23, 2026 in Red Deer Regional Hospital after a second, short battle with cancer at the age of 76 years. Birdeen was born on April 29, 1950, into the Swain family in Lacombe, Alberta and spent her life grounded in the values of strength, resilience, and deep family connection. She will be lovingly remembered for her quiet strength, thoughtful nature, and unwavering dedication to those she loved.
She will be dearly missed by her sons, Aaron (Laurel) and Brad (Ali), and her grandchildren, Savanna and Paige, who meant so much to her. Birdeen was part of a close and deeply connected family. She was predeceased by her husband Richard Sivacoe, her siblings Charlotte Davidiuk (Gord) and Don Swain; her parents, Marwood Swain and Olive (Swain) Wigmore, Art Wigmore; as well as Craig Davidiuk and Leslie Swain.
She will be lovingly remembered by her family, including Joan Swain; Barry Swain; Lindsay (Linsey) Umrysh and Cailey (Charlie Wu); Jocelyn (Swain) Hamdon and Amira; Nadia (Hamdon) Gilmour (Farrell), Tysir, and Aliya; Jamie Swain; Courtney (Driver) Davidiuk and Arlo; Jessica Swain and Olive; and Kimberley (Swain) Taylor (Zach), Atwood, and Aiden. Mike Swain (Jennifer); Patrick Swain (Claudeen).
Birdeen found a natural calling in the nursing profession, where her warmth and kindness touched the lives of many. Her gentle and welcoming nature made others feel at ease. It was work that suited her deeply, reflecting the compassion and generosity she carried throughout her life. She also had a love for travel and adventure, and was fortunate to spend time living overseas in many places. These experiences brought her great joy and perspective. During this time, she generously gave her time to good causes and treasured the memories and friendships she made along the way. Birdeen was a woman of quiet strength who rarely complained, no matter the challenge. Though small in stature, she was remarkably resilient, a tough little lady whose perseverance and determination carried her through life’s many ups and downs. Throughout her life, Birdeen valued time spent with family above all else. Gatherings, shared stories, and moments together formed the foundation of her happiest memories. Like many in her family, she carried a strength of character, built off strong will and pure “Swain stubbornness”, and a warmth that made all others feel welcome in her presence. Now reunited with her beloved Richard, Birdeen is once again at his side. We can imagine her enjoying a massive Charlotte fire, surrounded by family and friends who have gone before her, sharing laughter and stories once more. She will be remembered with love by her extended family, and the many friends who were fortunate to know her.
A Celebration of Birdeen’s Life will be held at a later date. If desired, memorial donations in honor of Birdeen may be sent to The Alberta Cancer Foundation at https://albertacancer.ca/. Cremation entrusted to Parkland Funeral Home and Crematorium, Red Deer, Alberta. Condolences, memories and photos may be shared and viewed at www.parklandfuneralhome.com
