Mr. David ‘Dave’ Brooks passed away peacefully, at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre, on Thursday, December 9, 2021 at the age of 71 years. Dave was born at the Hardisty Hospital on August 25, 1950, the second child and only son of Charles ‘Chuck’ and Leona. His childhood was spent on the Brooks family ranch where he loved being outside, playing, exploring and getting into trouble with his cousins, Greg and Grant. Until Greg was born, Dave was the only boy. He was usually ‘picked on’ by the older female relatives and he developed a wicked temper resulting in many broken windows and the girls having to ‘run for their lives’. As he grew older, Dave learned how to control his temper to the point he was too laid back; although every once in a while someone would push him too far much to their peril. In September of 1957, Dave suffered a great loss when his father suddenly passed away at home. He attended Czar School until Grade 9 and then finished his education at the Hughenden High. Dave did not like school and was not the best student because to him there were more important things to do than sit in a classroom. His one passion was mechanics. From the time he was a toddler, his mother said he was fascinated with motors and all things mechanical. When Dave was five or six, his mother, Leona came home to find Dave taking apart her clock just to see what made it work. With his father’s help, they put it back together. As he grew older, the kitchen table became his work bench; where Dave took apart almost everything to fix it, or to see how it worked. After finishing school, he went to work for local farmers and also made sure to have a good time whenever there was the opportunity. He spent over a year working at Todd Ranch, south of Czar and he always spoke highly of the Todd family. Dave then went to work for the Dambrowsky brothers, running a cat. Needing a more steady employment to help support his wife, Marion and a baby daughter in the fall of 1980, he began working at the MD of Provost, as a grader operator. In January of 1981, Dave began his career as a Heavy Duty Mechanic at the MD; completing his Journeyman Ticket in December of 1983, with a Provincial score of 99% and an Interprovincial score of 98%. He was approached by one of his Instructors, who asked him to consider becoming one himself, but Dave turned it down. He worked at the MD, until his retirement in 2015. Dave was a very unassuming man, what you saw is what you got. He did not care what anyone thought of him and he lived his life this way. Dave never tried to impress anyone; he was a man of integrity. He was an introvert, a very quiet person and a man of very few words but he always listened to the conversations around him. Dave rarely spoke a bad word about anyone, preferring to keep his opinions to himself, but he could tell someone what he thought at times, while swearing in full sentences. Dave was a loyal man to his friends and family, and expected nothing in return. Once he was comfortable around a person, he was able to carry on great conversations. He had a sense of humor and even some jokes, especially after a few drinks. Dave didn’t like being in crowds but preferred to be at home, surrounded by friends and family, and he was always there to lend a helping hand. In the summer months, following his retirement, Dave spent many hours out in his garden, or doing yard work. Occasionally, Dave and Marion took their trailer camping. They went on short trips, exploring Alberta and Western Saskatchewan. Dave enjoyed sitting on the deck with Marion, drinking coffee and watching the sunrise, or having the occasional beer and watching the sunset. A quiet life for a quiet man. Dave will be lovingly remembered by his wife of forty-two years, Marion, his two sons, Trevor and Brandon (Shannon) of Czar, Alberta, his step grandchildren, Scott (Sarah) Colquoun of Amisk, Alberta, David Martel of Medicine Hat, Alberta and his step great grandchildren, Logan, Bentley and Brooklyn of Amisk, Alberta. Dave will also be sadly missed by his mother-in-law, Eileen Smith of Red Deer, Alberta, his sister-in-law, Sharon Babcock and her family of Spruce Grove, Alberta, his sister-in-law, Charlene Collison and her family of Red Deer, his brother-in-law, Mike (Wanita) Smith and family of Rimbey, Alberta, his sister-in-law, Darla (Tom) Toliver and family of Red Deer, Alberta, his brother-in-law, Alvin (Debbie) Smith of Delburne, Alberta; as well as numerous close family and friends, including his traveling partner and hell raiser of sixty plus years, Allan Froland. Dave was predeceased by his parents, Chuck and Leona Brooks, a daughter, Amanda Brooks and his father-in-law, Richard Smith. A Celebration of David’s Life will take place in the summer.
