It is will great sadness that we announce the passing of Mr. Roger Fred McGonigal of Red Deer, Alberta on Monday, August 9, 2021 at the age of 72 years. Roger was born ON March 19, 1949, the first son of Eldon and Dorothy (nee Dye) McGonigal. He grew up on the farm with his two sisters, Linda and Shona, and his brother Robert; where many good memories were made farming and working with cattle, pigs and chickens. Roger spent his adolescent years on the family farm south of Alix, helping with chores and his farm duties. He was part of the local 4-H Club, raising livestock and enjoying the farm life. After graduating High School, he lived with his sister, Linda in Edmonton. During this time, he worked for the CN Railway. This job took him all over Western Canada, riding the rails. He spent time fighting fires in BC; and he always said he spent more time running from the fires, than fighting them. In April of 1971, Roger married Margaret Joan Sim. They lived in Alix and Edmonton for a short while; and then moved to Red Deer in 1974. Roger and Joan were blessed with four children, Charlene, Trevor, Darren and Angela. Roger started working for Shaw Cable in 1985. He spent the next thirty-three years working at Shaw, attending many of the corporate parties and get togethers. He enjoyed working at Shaw; meeting new people, and learning new skills. Roger spent his time in Red Deer raising his children, grandchildren and great grandchild. He enjoyed spending time with his family and many friends. Roger enjoyed bowling, playing baseball, playing cards, darts, golfing, dancing, curling, camping, fishing, and doing crossword puzzles. He also spent one week in Fairmont each year, for forty years, and was always helping with building decks and fences, scorekeeping for hockey tournaments and attending hockey and football games. He recently discovered a passion for disc golf; Roger was not afraid to try something new and would always lend a helping hand. Roger will be lovingly remembered by his children, Trevor, Darren (Tracy) and Angie (Trevor), his grandchildren, Denay, Mitchell, Alyssa, Taylor and Kiara, and his great grandson, Jayce. Roger was predeceased by his wife of forty-eight years, Joan, his parents, Eldon and Dorothy, a daughter, Charlene, a sister, Linda, and a brother, Robert. A Celebration of Roger’s Life will be held at the Quality Inn, 7150 – 50 Avenue, Red Deer, Alberta on Friday, August 20, 2021 at 11:30 a.m.
