Mrs. Verna Ann Hassen of Blackfalds, Alberta, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, May 19, 2021 at the age of 72 years. Verna was born on October 6, 1948 in Swift Current, Saskatchewan and was the second oldest of six children. Verna met her husband in Swift Current and the couple were later married in Trenton, Ontario. Verna and Moe moved to Red Deer; where they happily resided for forty-one years, until Moe’s passing. She raised two children, Cathy and Clayton; dedicating, devoting and supporting them in everything they did; whether it be their many activities, school sports and hockey, or the ongoing health issues of her daughter, she was there for us. Later in life, she had the greatest joy when she became a grandparent. Nothing made her happier than spending time with her growing family. Verna had various jobs during her life, but her biggest accomplishment was starting up her own craft and antique store. She was very crafty and artsy and spent hours creating beautiful pieces. Verna had so many interests and passions; she loved animals, especially her precious cats, “T” (Teaser) and Lacy May and her grand kitties, Wizzy, Milo and Gizmo, whom she loved, adored and spoiled very much. Verna was an avid gardener and spent hours starting plants from seeds. She took great pride in her flowers and vegetables. Verna also enjoyed watching animals out in nature, especially the squirrels and birds. She would spend hours outside with Cathy, laughing at their antics. Verna loved to cook and bake and we all loved enjoying her delicious food. Some of her other favorite things to do were watch TV movies and play computer games. A year after Moe passed, Verna moved to Blackfalds with her daughter and began a new journey, rebuilding her life and working hard. She was so proud of all she accomplished. Verna will be lovingly remembered by her daughter, Cathy Hassen and her grand kitties, Wizzy, Milo and Gizmo; her son, Clayton Hassen (Krista) and her grandsons, John and Tommy, her granddaughters, Lauren (Bjorn), her great granddaughters, Nora and Hillary (Mitchell) and her great grandson, Kristopher. Verna is now with her very special cats, Mr. T, Tigger and her dog, Hamish. Verna was predeceased by her husband, Moe Hassen, in April 2011, her father, William Oman and a sister, Rose. Verna will be laid to rest at a Private Family Graveside Service at Alto Reste Cemetery, Red Deer, Alberta. If desired, Memorial donations in Verna’s honor may be made directly to Whisker Rescue at whiskerrescue@live.com or Box 27138, Red Deer, Alberta, T4N 6X8 or to the Heart and Stroke Foundation at www.heartandstroke.ca.
