Marie Jeanette Hansen (née Starko)
April 10, 1948 – October 12, 2025
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Marie Jeanette Hansen, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, at the Red Deer Regional Hospital following a brief and sudden respiratory illness. Born in Vermilion, Alberta, Marie made Red Deer her longtime home.
She will be forever loved and deeply missed by her husband, Floyd Hansen; her children, Corinne Rozon (Ian) and Scott Hansen; and her seven grandchildren: Kate, Frances, and Matthew Hansen, and Camille, Annabelle, Xavier, and Nicolas Rozon, who were the light of her life. She is also mourned by extended family, who held a special place in her heart.
Her grandchildren invigorated her, always giving her something to do or help with. She treasured time with them—cheering from the sidelines, applauding from the audience, and delighting in the everyday moments that made each of them unique. She found joy in helping raise them, supporting their busy parents in countless ways, and being a steady, loving presence in their lives. Grandma enjoyed spoiling them—where else can you have Oreos for breakfast?
She was also a lifelong learner and observer of the world—an avid reader of the newspaper, a follower of current events, and someone who delighted in discovering new things, whether through travel, exhibits, or music. She especially enjoyed local concerts at the library, the Symphony, events through the local museum, walks at Bower Ponds, local yoga classes, and time spent at the Golden Circle. Marie was involved in many community activities—each one brought her connection, purpose, and joy. She would want those who shared those moments with her to know how much they meant.
Marie had a special love for quilting, both as a solitary craft and a shared passion. She was a proud and active member of the Central Alberta Quilters Guild, where she found joy in the annual Red Deer quilt show, charity quilting, taking classes, and jaunts to Central Alberta quilt shops. We are grateful to have her warm quilts to wrap ourselves in during our time of sorrow.
She also enjoyed travelling, as each new place brought something to see or learn. In earlier years, there were many road trips with the family to the U.S. She enjoyed international tours when she was healthy and able to do so—to Italy, Spain, Portugal, and Ireland. More recently, travel had become a little more daunting and tiring, so her trips to Mexico, Costa Rica, and France were cherished opportunities to connect with those she travelled with and to see the world one more time. If you have the opportunity to see the sunset on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica, think of Marie—she truly loved those sunsets.
Everywhere Marie and Floyd lived or worked, they formed meaningful friendships—often with neighbours who were part of their daily lives. These connections brought joy and companionship, and even if they hadn’t stayed closely in touch in recent years, Marie always appreciated those friendships and the happiness of reconnecting when the chance arose.
She was generous with her time and care, ready to help others in quiet, meaningful ways—offering rides or visiting those who couldn’t get out on their own, sharing meals, or dropping off baking to the CWL. Her kindness was steady and unassuming, and it left a lasting impression on those around her.
In keeping with her wishes, cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be planned for a later date.
