It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Douglas Howard Bryant on November 25, 2022, at the age of 74. Doug passed away peacefully with his family by his side after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife of 53 years Diane, daughters Tracy (Brent) McAuley, Sara Lennie (Darin Doel) The lights of his life, his granddaughters Teigan McAuley and Rayna Lennie. He is also survived by his sister Pat (Dale) Stannard and sister-in-law Janice Staines, nephews Adam (Laura) Stannard, Michael Staines, Christopher Staines (Lyndon) and niece Lisa Staines (Matt), as well as numerous other relatives. Doug was predeceased by his parents Jack and Elva Bryant his niece Jessica Stannard, mother and father-in-law Jack and Louise Sterling and brother-in-law Ron Staines. Growing up Doug played hockey and had the attention of the Chicago Blackhawks who had him on their prospect list when he was 16. Unfortunately, his dreams of being a Blackhawk were denied when he was accidentally shot by a friend while out gopher hunting. Doug also loved riding horses and spending time with his cousins on the family farm Doug and Diane met in Calgary in January 1969 and were married in October of the same year. They remained in Calgary until 1974 when the liquor board took them to Vilna, AB where Doug joined the volunteer fire department as well. In 1979 the liquor board then took them to Bentley where they both were a part of the volunteer fire department. After a few years, Doug’s fire fighting experience awarded him the opportunity to begin a new career on the Loss Prevention team at Nova Chemicals (formerly AGE). Doug and Diane met numerous lifelong friends and shared many memories and good times while working on the fire departments and they remain connected to their fire fighting family still today. Doug was also an avid card player and after retirement he and Diane continued to make friends and were regulars at Thursday night poker games at the Legion and Friday night crib games at Legacy Estates. When not playing cards, Doug could be found at various hockey rinks in the winter watching Teigan and Rayna play hockey, and at ball diamonds in the summer watching them play ball. Thank you to the staff of the Red Deer Regional Hospital ICU and Parkland Funeral Home for their kindness and compassion during this difficult time. At Doug’s request there will be no service, but a celebration of his life will be held in the spring/summer of 2023. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Central Alberta Cancer Center.
