Jack was born on July 13, 1947 in Chapleau, Ontario and passed away suddenly in Calgary, Alberta on Tuesday, September
10, 2024. He was the eldest son of Janet and Ed McCarthy and brother to Bruce (Diana) McCarthy, Janet (Wayne)
Murphy, Dennis McCarthy and Susan McCarthy. In his early career, he moved from Chapleau to work at Algoma Steel in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario worked a stint on the great lake boats, and later worked for many years in the food service industry in St. Catherine’s and Ottawa. Jack then ventured out west where he worked bartending for many years in Edmonton and Calgary. He later changed careers when he started his own painting and construction company. While mostly working in the Calgary area, he also travelled to Japan and Russia for a couple of projects. He met and married his wife Tena in 1999 having met her while living in the same condo complex. They enjoyed a wonderful life together with their various “fur kids”, flipping houses in the Calgary area and finally settling in Didsbury. Jack often travelled with Tena for her work, enjoying multiple trips to New Orleans, Alaska, and Newfoundland. They also enjoyed extended vacations to Arizona in the winter to escape the Canadian cold for several winters. In retirement, Jack continued with his love of woodworking, the garage was never for cars, only wood working projects such as planter boxes, lighthouses with working solar lights, bird houses, and wishing wells. He also loved smoking meat on his BBQ smoker, taking inspiration from all kinds of recipes on
the internet. One of Jack’s greatest gifts was his ability to make everyone feel at ease and welcome no matter where you met him. He also loved to tease. The more he liked you the more likelihood was that he would tease you. He loved to help people anyway he could and was passionate about NFL football and NHL hockey. Jack was predeceased by his mother and father, Janet and Ed, his brother Dennis, his sister Susan and his brother-in-law Wayne Murphy. He leaves to mourn a long list of family members, his wife Tena of 25 years, Mother-in law Flory (Bob) Wilkins, his brother Bruce (Diana) McCarthy, and nephew Ryan (Kellie) McCarthy, great nieces Taryn and Reese, great nephew Patrick, niece Shannon McCarthy and great niece Hailey, his sister Janet, nephews Sean (Terri) Murphy, Matthew (Trisha) Murphy, great niece Molly and great nephew Donovan.
