Sandy, Wayne Leonard
June 29, 1946 to June 30, 2022
Wayne Sandy passed away in SkyPointe Hospice, Calgary, with his family by his side. He will be remembered by his wife, Ina; his daughter, Dianna Thornborough (Brian); and his son Christopher Sandy (Rachelle); as well as his two favorite grandsons, Elliot and Cooper Thornborough. His humor will also be missed by his many cousins, his “in-laws”, nieces, nephews, and numerous friends. He was raised in Nanton, Alberta. He developed a love for baseball, hockey, reading, and history that continued throughout his life. He was educated at both S.A.I.T. and the University of Calgary. Starting his career as a draftsman, he worked for many companies in the Calgary “Oil Patch”, retiring in 2009 as a consulting geologist. Wayne earned a lifetime membership in the Huntington Hills Community Association for his many hours volunteering as a Beaver leader, hockey and soccer coach, curling club director, and member of the “Suds Patrol”. In 2010, Wayne and Ina moved into their dream home in Didsbury where he pursued his passion for gardening. His family, friends, and neighbors received gifts of fresh vegetables, flowers, and preserves. He became involved in the Didsbury Stick Curling Club and the Friends of the Didsbury Library Society where he filled leadership roles in both organizations. He loved music and sang with the Valley Voices choir. Wayne enjoyed travelling. There were car and camping trips, bus tours, cruises, destination vacations, a long-stay trip, and riverboat journeys. There were also many trips to their “home away” cabin on the lake. There will be a celebration of his life on July 18, 2022 in the Multi-Purpose Room at the Didsbury Memorial Complex. Memorial donations may be made to either: Friends of the Didsbury Library Society, Box 1971, Didsbury, Alberta T0M0W0 or to the Didsbury Curling Club (Stirling Curling), Box 843, Didsbury, Alberta T0M0W0.
