Mr. Roy Edwin Barbeau of Red Deer County, Alberta passed away on Monday, November 4, 2024 at the age of 78 years. Born on November 19, 1945, in High Prairie, Alberta, Roy was the son of Horace ‘Shorty’ and Barbara Jean ‘Ruby’ Barbeau. He spent his early years in Kinuso, Alberta, before moving to Hay River in 1963, where he began working as a truck driver. From there, he transitioned into seasonal work on the river, eventually working his way up to Dredge Master. Roy also spent time as a Dredge Master in Fort McMurray before becoming a deckhand on the M.V. Hugh A. Young. In just a few years, Roy earned his Master of Minor Waters License and became the Captain of the M.V. Sans Sault, a position he held seasonally until operations in Hay River ceased. During the off-seasons, Roy worked a variety of jobs, including positions with Monkman’s Plumbing and Heating, delivering propane, and volunteering with the local Fire Department. After more than thirty years of seasonal work, Roy transitioned into mechanics, working for Stan Dean and Sons and later, Blue Diamond, until health issues forced his retirement. He then moved to Red Deer, where he spent his final days. Roy had a passion for gardening and enjoyed spending time with his children and later, his grandchildren. He also loved tinkering with broken things, always trying to fix them. Known for his ever-present coffee cup, Roy often joked that he was a “Jack of all trades, but master of none.” Roy will be lovingly remembered by his children, Roy of Edmonton, Apryl (Chris) of Red Deer, and Ryan of Hay River, and his granddaughters, B’Elanna of Red Deer, Talloulah and Rylie of Edmonton, and the family would also like to acknowledge his special friends, Terry Weber, Harold Monkman, Darren Robertson, Dennis Bradbury, Isabel Monkman, and Ross Potter. Roy was predeceased by his parents, Horace and Barbara Jean, and his brother, James. Cremation entrusted to Parkland Funeral Home and Crematorium, Red Deer, Alberta.
