Marguerite Elizabeth Merrithew of Red Deer, Alberta, passed away at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre on Wednesday, November 2, 2022 at the age of 77 years. Marguerite was born on February 3, 1945 in Salmon Creek, New Brunswick, to Herbert and Eleanor (nee West) Dykeman. Marguerite worked any job that she could find to keep her three daughters fed – from egg hatcheries to Big Stop Gas Stations, and everything in between. She was a long-time member of the Royal Canadian Millville Legion #59. She always volunteered her time when she could, as she struggled for most everything in her life and lived with perseverance. She was a single mom in the ‘60’s, going through abusive relationships, pancreatitis, alcoholism, a few car accidents, and a stroke that took her good side. She had to re-learn how to talk, walk, eat and to do everything left-handed – all of which landed her in the hospital but, I’m telling you, she always would put a smile on her face for you, no matter how bad she felt. She was a fighter with a compassionate heart and that smile of hers will remain with us forever. She loved everyone the same in our extended families. Marguerite will be missed by her daughters, Maxine (Thomas) Brown and children, Chevy Stairs, Samantha Stairs, Mindy Brown and Corrisa Brown; Annette Merrithew (Jeffrey) and their daughter, Sydney Merrithew-Hovey; Alisha (nee Pike) (Joey) Trecartin and their children, Emma, Meya, and Zachary; five plus her great grandchildren, and her seven plus great great grandchildren. She will also be sadly missed by her sisters, Laura Quinn, Carmel Anderson, Patsy MacNamara and Pearl Giggly, as well as numerous extended family members and dear friends. Marguerite was predeceased by her parents, Herbert and Eleanor; an infant brother, Stanley; her brothers, Murray and Thomas and her sisters, Mary Cheeseman, Evelyn Smith and Violet Bishop. A Celebration of Marguerite’s Life will be held at a later date. If desired, Memorial Donations in Marguerite’s honor may be made directly to the Royal Canadian Legion at www.legion.ca. The world is a little darker now.
Your shining light has gone.
You were so very special.
You were kind to everyone.
You always had the time to give a smile.
Whenever someone needed one.
Your kindness and your caring
Was like standing in the sun.
I hear your laugh in my memories.
Oh how you loved to laugh out loud.
You could find the funny and share it with the crowd.
You loved to dance and sing
And enjoy a drink
Or two.
I hope St. Peter met you at the gate with a cocktail for you.
