Larry “Sonny” Emil Sherman July 29, 1945 – August 31, 2024
It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of “Sonny” Larry Emil Sherman on August 31, 2024, at his home in Olds, Alberta, at the age of 79. Sonny was a beloved Father, Grandfather, Great-Grandfather, and Brother who will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Sonny was a true cowboy, boots, hat, and buckle- living with the grit and determination of a man who valued hard work, honesty, and punctuality. He cherished the simple joys of camping, a good game of crib, laughter around a table, or singing with a guitar in hand. The thrill of the rodeo and the great outdoors were his passions. His hands, strong from years of building custom saddles and tack, each piece a testament to his dedication and craftsmanship. In his later years, Sonny tried to trade his spurs for a gentler pace, but the spirit of the cowboy remained in him—ornery, resilient, and always ready with a story or a smile. He rode through life with a cowboy’s heart, leaving behind a trail of love, laughter, and memories that will continue to inspire all who knew him. Sonny’s legacy is one of kindness, strength, and love for his family.
He is survived by his daughter, Cori (Mike), and his sons, Kris, and Hal (Christine). He was a loving grandfather to Hailey (Jordan), Melissa (Kade), and Sky (Kale), who affectionately called him “Bumpa,” and a proud great-grandfather to Gemma, Jonah, Parker, and Jack.
Sonny is survived by his wife, Linda, with whom he remained friends despite their separation, and his siblings, Buddy and Myrna. He was predeceased by his parents, Emil and Loye, and siblings, Pearl, Walter, Carl, Donnie, Leona, Gordie, Wayne, and Gary. Sonny will also be remembered by his dear companion, Linda, who brought joy to his life.
A celebration of Sonny’s life will be held on Sunday, September 8, 2024, from 2 – 5:30 p.m. at the Olds & District Evergreen Hall (5237 – 52 Street, Olds.
Sonny’s family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to all who have reached out with love and support during this difficult time.
