It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mr. Melvin Albert ‘Mel’ Rempel of Red Deer, Alberta, after a hard fought battle with cancer, at home on Monday, February 1, 2021 at the age of 76 years. Mel was born in Steinbach, Manitoba, to Edward and Helene (nee Kihn) Rempel. Mel married his wife, Johanna (nee Nightingale) in Steinbach, Manitoba on September 3, 1966 and the couple had a happy fifty-four year marriage. After leaving the farm in Kleefeld, Manitoba, Mel relocated his family to Thompson, Manitoba, to start a Millwrighting Apprenticeship at the Inco Nickel Mine. In 1979, Mel moved his family from Manitoba to Medicine Hat, Alberta to work for Western Co-op Fertilizers, and then finally to Red Deer, Alberta at NOVA Chemicals; where he became a Maintenance Planner/Scheduler and worked for thirty-two years, until his retirement in 2015. Mel’s Faith in God was strong, as was his belief in Jesus Christ as our Saviour. Mel will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Johanna; their children, Kerry (Cheryl), Cameron and Rochelle; his nine grandchildren, Dean (Manda) Rempel, Dezaree (Brody) Anderson, Jordan Rempel, Stephanie Rempel, Dylan (Krystal) Rempel, Daylin Scott and Dustin Scott, Nicholas Rempel, Megan Rempel; and his great grandchildren, Tyler Entz, Rylin Brinston, Madisyn Krause, Naomi Anderson, Damien Rempel and Oliver Rempel. Mel will also be sadly missed by his sisters, Evelyn (Henry) Harder, Lorraine Pachal, Ruth (James) Ketler and his brothers, Randy (Carol) Rempel and Don Rempel; as well as numerous family members and dear friends. Mel was predeceased by his father, Edward Rempel in 2004; his mother, Helene Rempel in 2012 and a brother-in-law, Gordon Pachal on December 12, 2020. A Private Family Memorial Service will be held at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, Red Deer, Alberta. Cremation entrusted to Parkland Funeral Home and Crematorium, Red Deer, Alberta. Mel’s family would like to extend a special “Thank You” to the Alberta Home Services Home Care for all their help this past year, in caring for Mel. Johanna would also like to extend a special “Thank You” to Pastor Don Hennig, for the many years of spiritual caring. If desired, Memorial Donations in Mel’s honor may be made directly to the Mount Calvary Lutheran Church Renovation Fund at www.mclcrd.org.
