We are saddened to announce the passing of Elizabeth Kathleen “Bettie” Weigl (nee Johnson)on Sunday, April 9, 2023 at the age of 80 years after an extended illness. Bettie was born in Red Deer on April 29, 1942 to Kris and Kay Johnson. She grew up on the family farm south of Sylvan Lake and attended school in Markerville and Red Deer. During her time on the farm, Bettie was active in gardening and sewing 4-H Clubs. Following graduation from Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School in Red Deer, Bettie attended the University of Alberta in Edmonton, earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Home Economics. During her working career Bettie taught Commercial Food classes at Victoria Composite High School in Edmonton. Bettie embraced her Icelandic heritage and became an active member of the Stephan G. Stephansson Icelandic Society serving as secretary for several years. She was a Vonin member (Icelandic Ladies Aid) assisting in traditional baking. Bettie took a trip of a lifetime to Iceland in 2000 with four of her first cousins. In 2008 she was crowned Fjallkona, an honorary title given to a woman that has worked in the community to preserve Icelandic She is survived by her history and culture. She proudly wore the beautiful costume, representing the Markerville Icelandic Society. Bettie lived most of her life in Edmonton then briefly abroad in Algeria and Saudi Arabia, later moving to Innisfail. Bettie loved to travel, and she and Larry took numerous cruises and many trips in their motorhome. We sincerely wish to express our thanks to Tammy Whelan who provided exceptional care to her. Bettie is lovingly remembered by her brother Rod (Deanna) Johnson of North Saanich, British Columbia, her son Kristjan Weigl of Edmonton, Alberta, her nieces Lisa Johnson of San Francisco, California and Erika (Todd) Johnson of Esquimalt, British Columbia, and her partner of twenty-two years, Larry Heth of Innisfail, Alberta Bettie was pre-deceased by her father Kris in 1999 and her mother Kay in 2009.
