It is with heavy hearts we say goodbye to Allen Weiss. “Poppa” passed away suddenly on August 2nd doing what he loved – working on the farm. Allen was born on October 15th, 1942 in Olds Alberta to hard working parents Theofeil and Dorthea (Mill) Weiss. He was the second of five children raised on the family farm north of Sundre in the James River area. He attended school in Sundre, graduating, then moving to Calgary where he worked with CP Rail and then with Home Oil for 30 years, retiring to continue farming right up to his passing. In August of 1967 Allen married the love of his life Eileen McNab. They bought the ¼ section next to his parents shortly after and continued to add to their family. Their four children followed in the next 6 years along with their growing farm operation – adding land, cattle, horses, chickens, dogs and cats.
Al was so proud of his children as he watched them grow – bragging of their educational accomplishments, athletic achievements and eventually their own families. He spent countless hours at hockey rinks and ball diamonds around the province not only for his own children but the grandchildren as well. Allen was a wonderful man. Always a kind word, a hug and an infectious sense of humor. You always knew what Poppa found special about you. Everyone had a favorite thing you knew he loved about you. He loved spending time with his family whenever he could manage time away from the land he loved to farm. He treasured watching his family grow up and later on family ball tournaments and campouts. He loved old country music, playing the guitar, among other instruments and watching sports on TV. Allen went to the auction mart regularly where he liked to catch up with his farming buddies and visit with the auction mart staff. Al and Eileen did everything together. If one went into town the other was close behind. They farmed together, they went for drives together, they visited children and grandchildren together. They were true partners in everything they did. Absolute true love and commitment. Al was predeceased by his parents Theofeil and Dorthea Weiss, nephews Orrin and Murray Weiss. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Eileen and their children Leonard, (Janessa) Weiss, Leonora (Kevin) Benson, Mary Weiss and Mark Weiss, as well as their nine grandchildren and their four great grandchildren. He also leaves behind his two brothers and two sisters, their families and special Aunt Mary, and Uncle Vernon.
Allen was laid to rest in a private family ceremony at the Sundre cemetery on August 5th, 2022, a public service was held at The Faith Lutheran Church in Sundre later that day. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to H.A.R.T. (Humanitary Aid Response Team).
