It is with great sadness and heavy hearts we announce the passing of Reginald Thomas Scarrott. Reg passed away peacefully on Tuesday February 8th, 2022 at Red Deer Hospice with his wife Betty at his side after a courageous battle with cancer. Reg was 80 at the time of his passing.
Reg was born in Olds Alberta to Thomas and Vida Scarrott of Eagle Hill on July 1, 1941. The oldest of three boys, Reg spent most of his childhood helping on the farm surrounded by extended family. At 19 Reg took a room at a boarding house in Red Deer, where he worked at Corbit’s Electric. Inspired by his lifelong desire to take things apart and see how things work, Reg went to SAIT for Mechanics. After graduating he returned to Red Deer where he began dating Elizabeth Leslie of Ennerdale/Berrydale district.
Reg and Betty were married July 29, 1967 eventually settling in Olds. They spent the next seven years travelling and enjoying one another’s company until 1974 when they began their family with the addition of Leslie Scarrott. During this time Reg worked at the Olds Massey Ferguson dealership until an opportunity came to join Olds College as an instructor in the Agricultural Mechanics department. In 1976, Daniel Scarrott was added to the family and later Ronald Scarrott arrived in 1979. Family was always a huge part of Reg’s life, and his career at Olds College afforded him plenty of time to camp, farm, and enjoy holidays with his family. Frequent camping trips to Fairmont Hot Springs with Rene and Lavern Snideman and families were an annual highlight for Reg. Often chatting over the CB radio to entertain everyone. Going by their CB handles, Bolder Belly and Gravel Gut, they were always willing to share a laugh or point out something interesting, even the truckers got a laugh out of their handles.
Reg retired from Olds College after 35 years of service, having worked with some of the most outstanding people who became lifelong friends. Reg and Betty built a new home on the family farm which they enjoyed throughout their retirement. Retirement brought lots of opportunities to socialize at the Legion and at home with many friends and family. Reg thoroughly enjoyed camping and touring throughout the northern United States, trips to California and Arizona to see family and friends, vacations in Cabo, cruises to Alaska and through the Panama Canal, fishing trips, and visiting his grand children were among his favourite pass times. Wood working was always a huge part of Reg’s life. He spent many hours building things for his sons and grandchildren and to support Betty’s quilting club too.
Reg was always willing to share is knowledge or to lend a hand to any friends or family in need. He could be counted on to get things working again and was never shy to share a smile and a laugh no matter the task at hand.
Reg is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Betty, his brother Len and Terry Scarrott of Olds, his brother-in-law Jim and Norma Leslie of Stettler Alberta, his children Les and Jean Scarrott of Hesperia California, Dan and Cindee of Red Deer Alberta, Ron and Brandee of Airdrie Alberta and his grandchildren Abigail, Whitney, Sarah, Dean, Victoria, Caitlin, and Genavieve, and nephews Rick, Michael, and Ian, and numerous other extended family and valued friends.
Reg was predeceased by his parents Thomas and Vida Scarrott, and his brother Donald Scarrott.
In lieu of flowers or gifts, donations can be made to Red Deer Hospice Society or Olds and District Hospice Society.
