Marlene Wensel of Blackfalds, Alberta, passed away on Thursday, June 13, 2024 at the age of 82 years. Marlene Alma Wensel was born in Empress, Alberta to August and Alma Hoffmann. After an emergency appendectomy at the age of eight years, she vowed to become a nurse. She completed her nursing training in 1963 at the Holy Cross Hospital, Calgary, Alberta. Marlene married Waldemar ‘Wally’ John Wensel in her hometown on April 4, 1964. They built their dream home on a farm near Camrose, Alberta soon after, and lost everything in a house fire in 1969. They adopted their daughter, Janette, the same year. Having moved numerous times around Alberta and Saskatchewan, their son, Arden, was born in 1972. Marlene’s thirty-plus year nursing career was spent at the Good Samaritan Hospital, private duty with St. Johns, Parkland Nursing Home, the Glenrose Hospital, and the Edmonton General Hospital. After her forced retirement from nursing, she kept busy with work at Brewsters in Banff, the IGA in Canmore, VON (Victorian Order of Nurses), and the Kerby Centre in Calgary. Marlene would tell you that “nurses never retire”, always dispensing advice, and caring for her friends at her condo complex in Calgary. She moved to her 4 Generation home in Blackfalds, Alberta in 2022, and went on to make many new friends, enjoying her church, potlucks, coffee time with the ladies, and the Blackfalds Senior’s Club. Marlene will be lovingly remembered by, and leaves to mourn, her daughter, Janette; her son, Arden; her grandchildren, Winona, Connor, Austen, and Sofia; and her great grandson, Kylan. She will also be sadly missed by her sister, Eleanor (Dave); her brother, Brian; and her many nieces and nephews. Marlene was predeceased by her parents, August and Alma Hoffmann; her ex-husband, Wally; her brothers-in-law, Edward and William; her son-in-law, Clifford; and her sister-in-law, Donna.
