MOTTUS, Arnold
1941 – 2025
Arnold Roy Mottus passed away peacefully at the Michener Extendicare Nursing Home in Red Deer, Alberta on December 11, 2025 at the age of 83 years old. Arnold was born on December 14, 1941 in Eckville, Alberta, to Rudy and Myrtle Mottus (Patapoff), Arnold was raised, along with his sisters, on the family farm in the Gilby District. He attended elementary school at the Estonian School and was then bused into Eckville School where he graduated High School in 1961. Arnold shared many fond memories of his childhood adventures on the farm and spending lots of time with his beloved grandparents. He spoke fondly of grandpa Solberg’s fiddle playing, adventures with his sisters, and the mischief he got himself into with his childhood friends! Arnold always had a huge love for cats and enjoyed spending time with his little fur buddies over the years. After graduating high school, Arnold worked for Eckville Electric for one year and then started water well drilling. Arnold would often share highlights of his water well drilling days through stories about his adventures across the province of Alberta, including mountain hikes in Canmore. Arnold married Vera Kind (nee Robinson) in 1969 and also became a dad to her young son, Robert Kind. They lived in the Poplar Ridge District until 1972, when they moved to Red Deer and then welcomed their daughter, Catherine (Cathy) in 1974. Arnold decided to continue his education and became a 4th Class Power Engineer in 1976 before obtaining his Master Electrician ticket in 1982. During this time, Arnold worked in maintenance at Canada Packers, Government of Canada – Penhold Bunker, and Red Deer Forklift before he retired in the mid 1990’s. When not working, Arnold kept himself busy with fly fishing, bike riding, playing crib, trips to the mall, spending time with his family and of course, his beloved cats, especially Chester! He enjoyed family trips to Disneyland, Waterton Park, West Edmonton Mall, and watching hockey, figure skating, and baseball. He also loved driving out west to visit his sisters, cousins, and extended family in the Eckville area. Arnold was a gentle man who was always thinking of others and was known for his generosity and his silly jokes! He loved to deliver the Western Star newspaper to neighbours, drop off Timmie’s coffee and treats to the ladies at the Advocate, and help feed stray cats over the years. Arnold was also known for loving a good meal or tasty treat and his cold orange crush pop! Arnold is survived by his daughter Cathy Mottus-Landry (Marcel), grandson Carter Mottus, stepson Robert Kind (Shannon), granddaughters Chelsea Kind-Hougan (Johan), and Jenna Maisonville (Keith), and his great-grandchildren Alina Hougan, Jai Hougan, and Ember Maisonville. He is also survived by his sisters, Jean Maki, Helen Davenport (Les), Cheryl Gelinas (John), Angela Mottus, stepsisters Valerie Anderson (Norman), Debbie Sleno (Dave), and Susan Merrifield (Jim Babiuk), as well as many extended family members including his special nieces, nephews, and cousins.
