Marilyn was born on November 5, 1940, to Mary “Irene” (Johnston) Walker and Meredith Auston Walker in Kindersley, Saskatchewan. The Walker family lived in Alsask, Saskatchewan until moving to the Heckla District in 1946. Their son Michael came along, on April 3, 1963. Scott was born on April 7, 1969, but passed away on April 20, 1969. The family moved to the farm just after Michael was born, so Lyle could begin farming with his family.
