HICKS, Margaret
1940 – 2025
Mrs. Margaret ‘Margie’ Lynne Hicks (nee Morris) passed away at Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre, on Wednesday, May 21, 2025 at the age of 84 years. Margie was born on December 30, 1940, at Medicine Hat, Alberta to Leonard and Margaret Morris. She graduated from the University of Alberta with BSc in Medical Laboratory Science. Margie worked in hospitals in Red Deer and Medicine Hat. She married John Hicks on August 8, 1964, and resided in Calgary before moving to Red Deer in 1977. Margie’s commitment to community and volunteer service was a huge part of her life and included various positions throughout the years. Organizations included Red Deer and District Museum, City of Red Deer, Red Deer Housing Authority, the Red Deer Community Foundation, Alberta Museums Association, Red Deer Symphony Orchestra, Red Deer College Foundation, and UNICEF Red Deer Committee. In 1992, Margie received the Mayor’s Recognition Award for Long-Term Volunteer Service. Margie worked for the Red Deer Archives cataloguing City of Red Deer documents, as well as private collections of individuals. During her employment with the Handicapped Housing Society of Alberta, she led the development of the first wheelchair accessible apartment complex. Margie loved her time on the tennis court and the community of life-long friends. She and John enjoyed many cruises, but she was happiest sitting on a beach watching the ocean. The arrival of her granddaughters were a whole new chapter and brought her immense joy. Margie will be lovingly remembered by her husband of sixty years, John Hicks; her daughter, Erin (Kelly) Wilson of Calgary and her grandchildren, Taylor and Lauren; her sister, Jeanne Stringer of Delta, British Columbia, as well as numerous family members and dear friends. Margie was predeceased by her brother-in- law, Bob Stringer. The family would like to thank the staff of the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre for their care and compassion: Dr. LaRue, Dr. Conradie, Dr. Yam, and the nursing staff of the emergency department and Units 32 and 33. A Celebration of Margie’s Life will be held at Parkland Funeral Home, 6287 – 67 A Street (Taylor Drive), Red Deer, Alberta on Thursday, June 12, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. Cremation entrusted to Parkland Funeral Home and Crematorium, Red Deer, Alberta.
