BURTON, Marjorie Olive
1939 ~ 2025
Marjorie ‘Marge’ Olive Burton of Sundre, Alberta, passed away at the Michener Centre in Red Deer, Alberta, at the age of 86 years, with her children by her side on Thursday, December 11, 2025. Marge was born in Calgary, Alberta, on Monday, February 20, 1939, and was the fourth of six children to Margaret and Harold Burton. Two of her siblings sadly passed when they were young, Les Burton on September 18, 1972, and Joan Hobbs on September 20, 1981; and recently, her sisters, Hazel Stemen on December 23, 2023, and Edna Baughman on January 23, 2024. Marge married Jack Kuyltjes in 1958, and shortly thereafter they moved to Sundre, where, with the help of a loan from Aunt Nora, they purchased land and began building their life together. They raised three children and spent cherished hours visiting her parents and younger brother, Danny, at the family farm in Acadia, along with many memorable trips to see her sisters, Hazel and Joan, in Calgary and, in later years, Joan near the Sheep River close to Okotoks. Marge and Jack went their separate ways in the early 1980’s. Marge was a tireless worker, contributing in many ways over the years. She worked at the Sundre Creamery, drove a school bus, became an A.I. technician, and, for approximately 30 years, owned and operated Sundre Men’s Wear, all while continuing to work daily on the farm. Her work ethic was matched only by her willingness to help others, as she was always ready to provide food or assistance to anyone who needed it. She, and her close friend, George, spent many hours fixing farm equipment and going into town for chats over coffee, which she enjoyed immensely. An avid gardener, she found joy in caring for her plants and flowers. She shared a deep love of cats as her mother, Margaret, did. She also enjoyed spending time on her sewing machines by creating countless tiny Barbie clothes as well as clothes for her children. She could out “patch” anyone. Throughout her life, she was fortunate to have the steady support of her younger brother, Danny Burton, and her eldest sister, Edna Baughman, who both lived nearby, remaining close over the years. She is lovingly remembered by her children, Marcia Carmichael (Mike Lowrie), Kelly Kuyltjes, and Stephen Kuyltjes (Katherine); her brother Dan Burton (Sue); and her grandchildren, Katie Carmichael (Colin Rylands), Braedon Carmichael, Patrick Lowrie, Delaney Lowrie, Danielle Kuyltjes, Courtney Kuyltjes (Ben McClintock), and Lindsay Kuyltjes. Her life was one of strength, kindness, determination and dedication to her family. Her legacy continues to live on in all who knew and loved her. A Celebration of Life will be scheduled in Marge’s honour in Spring of 2026. Cremation entrusted to Parkland Funeral Home and Crematorium, Red Deer, Alberta.
